Fixing problems with overly sunny images

Hello all, I am trying to work out the best way to make overly sunny days bearable when taking photos. The sun is extremely harsh and bleaches tones.

What is your best advise for making images taken outdoors look good regardless of intense sunshine?

I am using lightroom 4 and could do with some help.

Kind Regards,

Shaun.

Can you post a pic or two so we can see what you mean Shaun?
I'd be guessing and say it's the contrast your having trouble with, you may find hdr (high dynamic range) might help but it depends exactly on what your getting and what your affter.

That doesnt look to bad. You could maybe add a little contrast, or try the tone curve contrast on meduim and maybe drag the highlights slider back a little.
Try the clarity slider too.

Bright sunshine will always cause a few issues, you just need to add a bit of contrast back into the image.

Yeah looks fine to me.
You could go the other way and get that washed out look that seems popular at the moment, but personally I'm not a fan and ideally you need more golden light for it to work.

As you have Lightroom, you can use the adjustment brush to apply some local exposure adjustments to any problem areas. When the sun is very bright you will often have to sacrifice the correct exposure of the background to get a correct exposure of the foreground (ie, skintones).

If I was processing that image i might want to knock down the exposure of the poppies close to the camera and near the subject's trousers just a little bit, they look a touch on the hot side (but not too much, just enough to get a bit of detail back).
