Flash Gun options for 40D's

OK, so what should I be looking at?

Canon's own or other makes such as Nissin or whatever?

And what about off camera flash, I've seen one option, what others am I looking for?

I was looking for either 430exii or the nissin di866 but decided for the canon in the end just for the build quality but now wish i had gone for the nissin for extra power and features

So canon for build quality
Nissin for features and extra power

I've just taken delivery of two Nissin Di466 flash guns. Build quality seems fine to me and at a tad under £82 each a damn good price. Possible a bit underpowered for some things but I would certainly be confident buying the larger models having seen these.
