Hi

This is going to be so obvious when some one answers this but at the moment its got me stumped.

When I first got my 400D I used it in auto mode to help me understand what was happening in a shot by reading the exif data, I took some shots of the wife outside and the flash popped up and worked great,

Now I shoot alot in the other modes but mainly manual and for the life of me I cannot find how to get the flash either the built in flash or the flash on the hot shoe to opperate in this mode.
Same with the 50D I have just upgraded too, cannot get the flash to work in manual mode.

Can someone please explain how to go about this as its really bugging me

Thanks

Spike

The pop up flash has a button on the side of the camera,50D:)

The button with a zap next to it. Press it and the flash comes up.

Like they said normally a button to make the flash pop up. Although when I put one in the hotshoe if its turned on and not in standby it normally works with out pressing anything else or changing setting.

Thanks for that scarevrow really useful reply, if you got nothing to add do not say it, thats why I posted in the talk basics section. I had read the manual but got lost in the process.

Some people on this site really pee me off with stupid comments to an easy answer, specially as it had already been answered by 3 to 4 very helpful people.

Hey, another thread to elicit the automated RTFM response! ;)

That response is just what you would expect it from a so called "know it all" in a thread like this, now you will understand why people are frightened to ask such basic questions:bang:

Scarecrow, why are you reading this thread anyway ? if you cannot answer constructively :nono:

Never be frightend to ask a question Briony, as shown in this thread I asked a relatively easy to answer question that i could not find the answer too and 3-4 people came straight back with an answer for me which really helped.
You have a choice on what to do about the other responce and that is to ignore it and put it down to they need to grow up a bit or you can say something like i did.
The mads seem to keep an eye on this section for that sort of thing so maybe just flagging it up to them might be a better idea.

The manual is there for those times when you pressed every button and still can't find what you need. Then again most manuals are written so badly it's quicker to ask questions here or Google for the answer.

This is a forum for basics - RTFM should be barred from use since it contradicts what the forum is all about.

The manual for the 50D is not that clear as far as I'm concerned so RTFM isn't a great deal of help with questions like this. Possibly a reply along the lines of "if you look at page (inset page number) of the manual it explains this clearly for you" would be helpful, although I doubt it having read my manual from cover to cover.

Oh get a life people.

The question had already been answered and the thread effectively dead before I posted my response. If no one had given a valid answer before I posted, then I would have given a more 'mature' answer and mentioned the small button on the side of the prism housing that should be used to open the flash manually.

And Briony, where did I ever profess to being a 'know it all?' If you ever perused any of my posts before making such a sweeping statement, you will see that I have often stated that I still have a lot to learn with regard to photography and getting the best from my camera.

I repeat

Scarecow, that's a completely unnecessary post. If you haven't got anything constructive to bring to the thread, then I strongly suggest you don't post in it.

fabs, in my first post, I made a gentle tongue in cheek dig (spot the smiley?) after the original question had already been answered. I could understand people getting narked if mine had been the first response to appear in this thread.

Briony then had a go at me personally, so I feel it justifiable to respond to that.

As for making unnecessary posts, surely you are just as guilty of that with your last effort!

Even more reason to have just left it.. it was a totally unnecessary post, that must mean you were being an A** just for the hell of it.. If you don't want to help on a thread like this then just jog on by.. its not going to help the OP and it certainly wont help you.. But keep trying to justify it..

Keep the Peace.. One love. :D

THEN HELP OTHER PEOPLE TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THERE CAMERA EVEN IT MEANS ANSWERING A SIMPLE QUESTION THAT HELPS THEM ON THE WAY

We have all been there and done it at one stage or another and will often be in this position again, (asking a simple question) but - hey  are we not here to help each other??

Fabs, Spike's question has been solved can you not lock this if Spike agrees and remove posts from 6 onwards.

Just an idea :)
