Flash Triggering Flash

Hi all,

I'm trying to do some portraits using a slave and my cam flash to trigger, is there a way to 'turn down' my cam flash as it lights everything up and renders the external slave useless.

Using a 500d and a YN 467 as the slave. I know i could easily buy a remote trigger/cable but after just spashing on a lens would rather 1 less package turning up.

Thanks

Not really. 500D is E-TTL only and you can't switch the flash to manual, or disable the pre-flash. Anyway, you need the main flash to trigger the YN 467.

Best you can do is turn the flash exposure compensation down to -2, and position some card in front to shade the subject, but direct the flash twowards the remote gun so it will fire. Or put a couple of dark red cellophane wrappers from Quality Street over the pop-up.

YN 467 in S2 mode.

Interesting, but wouldnt that still have the flash quit bright? Will have to experiment will it abit. Failing that think I'll have to bite the bullet and get a trigger.

not really... i invested in some flash gels aswell expecting issues still and as yet havent had to use them.... im very impressed by them....

An SG3-IR will only work if the slave flash is triggered by infrared light.....

But it should still 'kill' most of the spill won't it and just let enough trigger light slip through so not to overpower the off-camera unit? Isn't that what OP is asking for or have I mis-read?.... :)

An SG3-IR shouldn't let any visible light through at all and the 467 requires that to trigger as a slave.

It's a moot point anyway as the optical slave on a YN-467 is hopeless, a set of triggers is the only sensible option....

Thanks for all your replys guys.

Did so e experimenting last night with cardboard in front of the flash slowing just enough to get to the slave to trigger. It worked ok but I wasn't getting the results I was hoping for, need a lot more practise. Was trying to get some low key portraits but it's frustrating when you are model and photographer haha.

Even though the external flash was on me I was well away from my background, in the dark, I was still getting the background lit up at even lowest flash setting :(

Shooting manual, iso100, 1/200 shutter, f5. Camera about 1-2 meters away in front, flash to the left 1 meter away, background 3+ meters away to the rear.

Maybe need umbrellas or soft box for the flash.
