General question about what you all use for online storage of your photos. The main 1 seems to be Flickr, but I've been finding a couple of limitations with it. Firstly, you have to pay to hold onto the original size of the photo, and secondly, the only acceptable forum size it provides is 500 on the longest width.

The first alternative I temporarily used (and still use for a general "messing with photos" storage) is photobucket.com. My main grief with it is that a lot of my photos look a little softer or something when rendered from it. So I've stopped using it as main storage.

The only other alternative, and the best one I've found yet, is pix.ie. I found this site recently and am starting to move over some of my stuff to it. It's very close to what flickr already provides, but with 3 main attractions I love:

1. It's free.
2. You have a size available to link to with 800 at the longest edge
3. It supplies you with a box with the IMG tags already there for you to copy (including a link back to your pix.ie)

Just thought I'd share this alternative seeing as I came across it. I can't think of any others. What alternatives are you aware of that might be good to share? What site do you use? Why do you use it?

On the same page also has HTML tags for linking back to your flickr and a direct url to the image itself.
 
What I meant was in pix.ie you don't have to "build" that img tag. It provides it already with the link back inclusive:

Firstly, you have used a basic account which doesn't give you access to the original. That was my first issue with flickr.

My second issue with flickr is actually that you have to pay to get the original, and then you don't have access to a photo with 800 on the longest edge. Unless you resize it before hand... if that suits the user then excellent.

In regards to img tags, if it's easier to copy it then why type it?

Don't get me wrong. Nothing wrong with flickr. Provides an excellent service for what it is. But there's nothing wrong with competition either. My questions still stand:

What alternatives are you aware of?
What do you use?
Why do you use it?
 
Whats wrong with paying for something?

Are you for Yorkshire?

Lads, nothing wrong with paying for something. For the record, I have a flickr account that I pay for. And if flickr ever add the couple of changes above I'll stick with them.

Anwyay. I'm off to pick nits from my head being the monkey I am for starting this thread :nuts:
 
I use photobucket... it's easy. As for sizes, I only create and upload the sizes I want. Mostly only 800 on longest side.

I used it for quite a bit alright. It's excellent for what it is, and it also provides those handy text boxes with the img tags.
 
Have you tried Google's Picasa?

It is a little fiddly, but you can have an 800px photo:

I actually haven't. Not sure why I never considered it :thinking::lol:. Must really suss it out see what I think.

Just thought of another I used a while back. shutterfly.com. I must take a look at it again and see why I used to use it.

Edit: Missed a question from tiler65 - for the record, I'm not from yorkshire :lol:.
 
I'll have to say +1 to pix.ie

So far I've found nothing near it,The 500mb a month is great(5x biggers than flickr) the fact if you don't pay you can use it for back up and always have access to the high res images..And you're not limited to 200 images.

Since moving to pix.ie I rarely use flickr,I don't see the need to pay yahoo money to use their site when I can get what I want elsewhere for free.

Not as free as you may have thought ;) or am I reading this wrong?
 
To me it reads the same as the flickrs terms and conditions. Basically, they need the rights to display and resize your photos. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to provide the service. They don't claim ownership over the photos and it terminates as soon as you take your photo off the pix.ie site.

Ok I guess I'm looking into it far deeper than I need to, if that is the case it looks like a good alternative then ;)

If you don't mind paying then look at Zenfolio - pretty cheap for unlimited storage, has 800x sizes and allows you to control whether or not to allow downloading originals - seems to tick all the boxes.
 
Tried flickr,dont really like it,i have used photobucket for a number of years & i will probably always keep that one,even just as a standby.
I am trying out pix.ie & so far i think it is brilliant.:):thumbs:

Erm, the important term here is perpetual.
This means that it does not stop when you attempt to remove the photos. They are also authorised to keep copies of your photos after you have attempted to remove them. (read the T&C carefully). The same terms are appearing on many sites (including Polar Rose, where it really is not required), and it is a bit concerning.

This:
Your license to Pixie with respect to any Content will terminate once you or Pixie remove it from Pixie. However, you acknowledge that Pixie may retain archived copies of your Content.

Is not actually saying that by terminating your account, you are terminating Pixies license to the material, it is actually the other way around, that you are no longer licensed to use the Pixie service.

If you have a computer permanently on, and connected via a DSL line, consider something like gallery2
It is Open Source Software, GNU licensed, there is no fee to use it. You can set up images to be whatever sizes you want. You can set passwords to protect some albums and not others. You can even set up shopping carts to sell your photos, or get them printed via several online photo companies.

So this particular point doesn't apply to photo content. Also, the most important part of the terms and conditions states this, which is basically the standard for any good online storage site like pix.ie or flickr.com:

Only reason I'm pointing out the above is I think we need to be fair and give them a fair chance. they are basically just another flickr.com. If someone considering uploading to either flickr or pix doesn't agree with the above T&C then fair enough, I say don't upload.

Gallery2, never heard of this. Something else for me to consider! Sounds like a really neat piece of software though so thanks for the heads up :).
 
Thought I should pop in and say I've joined pix.ie and am loving it so far. Have been using photobucket to link shots to TP previously because you can upload at the right size for the forum - but the IQ takes a bit of a beating. Pix.ie is definatly doing a better job of it so I am won over - thanks for the link :thumbs:
