Flickr as backup

Just realized that as I'm on btinternet I can have a free pro flickr account! So I've deleted the old one and set up a new one.

Wondered if anyone else is doing this, -

As it's unlimited I've set it to upload everything from my iPhoto - obviously most is personal so it's under private. But as it stores them full res..it's a pretty useful extra back up to my external harddrive. Only thing is it seems to convert my nef files to jpeg...

Anyone else using this as an extra backup?

as long as it's an extra backup and not your only backup, its a good idea.

I don't do it personally, but I already have a backup of my backup

I'd say it's more important to back up your NEFs than JPEGs made from the NEFs.

NEF is your "digital negative" so is the priority for backing up.

been loads of threads on this recently.. flickr is not a backup, for starters it applies processing to your images so youll never get your originals back.

Thats a very interesting read, I've never been a fan of flickr or any other photo sharing sites, I prefer to put my pictures on my own webspace or you are never really in total control.

I suppose if you get the account for free you you could take advantage of the service but I wouldn't use it as a backup.
