Anyone else find this both fascinating and frustrating in equal measure?

I look at Explore most days and, quite frankly, spit coffee on my keyboard on a regular basis at some of the shots that are included (without wishing to single out any in particular) yet, shots that I would consider to be 'interesting' from me an others I look at don't appear.

I know it is of no relevance or importance and has no specific criteria, but maaaaaan it drives me nuts some days! :bang:

Am I alone?

6551 uploads to flickr in the last minute. 500 photos per day can make it to explore. These are not picked by a human, but chosen by a program that can only look at the interest expressed in it (views, comments faves...)

Take in to account the different interests on there, eg. all the 'look what i made' arts and crafts groups, and the amount of sycophants who will give a sparkly super double artistic spirit of awesomeness to anything so long as it's even a little in focus (or so far out of focus to enduce bokeh) of course there'll be some junk. It doesn't bother me. I just have to dig a little to find great photos.

I'm pretty sure there is human input... mainly some of the folks in the London office picking their own personal favs.

I thought it was just the 500 shot each day with the most interestingness? I agree, there are loads of Gold Award From The SuperAmazingWonderfulAwesome Photo Group!!!!! type comments on there. The 'Post 1 must award 5' groups do my head in on there. I will add a comment on someones picture if it grabs my attention in some way, not because I have to. Explore seems to be 70% HDR shots some days, as they look good.

I doubt it's purely computer, because one of my contacts is on Explore practically everyday! OK, good pics, BUT for him to be on there every other day, most the shots are the same as previous AND the same as what others produce.....I doubt he'd be randomly chosen every other day by pure input of a machine.

But I do agree, I do get mad/laugh at the sheer carp that gets into Explore[sometimes!!]

You really think someone reviews all of the photos uploaded in a single day to pick the best?

Make sure you've got your photo in groups, keyworded and goetagged for starters, after that it seems you need to fit somewhere in into this rhyme I've just lifted from here:

Sunsets and meerkats and pandas and kittens!
Rainbows and macros and babies with mittens!
HDR pictures of flowers in Spring!
These are a few of Explore's favorite things!

(gotta luv that "Luv2Run")

Anyway, its definitely a computer generated hash thats driven by number of views, number of groups posted to, number of times its been favourited and number of comments - and its got to do that in 24hrs and be in the top 500 "most active" photos newly posted on Flickr. Probably minus some keywords to filter out anything unsavoury and then finally manually edited to make sure you haven't tagged some hardcore pr0n with "cute fluffy panda sunset" just to upset them :)

You can see sort of how it works by looking at your own photostream ranked by "most interesting" - take this as a 24hr activity snapshot instead of a lifetime one, and thats it.

Basically you need to be a Flickr-whore to get on explore. Just posting up blinding photos won't do it.

I don't really believe all of that to be honest. There is definitely some human input. If you look at some photos they have single figure views and no favourites. If it is an algorithm then it's not the most accurate.

Of course there isn't someone reviewing all image. At it's peak flickr gets 6-7000 uploads per minute. But that's not to say someone looks at some of the images that make it into the final 500. I have images in Explore that are not geotagged.

2 of mine made it to explore, god knows why as they aren't the best and have 3 faves and @33 views.. my cats have never made it ;)

Used to look at explore quite a lot and now do so hardly at all. It seems to me that there is a almost an 'explore standard' shot - hyper-real colours and extreme perspective feature quite a lot. Nice if you like that sort of thing but it does seem a bit repetitive (not to knock what are usually excellent examples of the type).

I believe three of mine have made it on - though none for quite a long time.

If I want to be inspired on flickr at the minute I head to the Tri-X/BW film galleries and feel somewhat of an amateur in comparison.

Not sure about that.

I was shocked to learn one of mine had been added after only a handful of views, a couple of comments and a couple of favourite adds. At that point it was only in a couple of groups too and didn't have any tags.

No idea how it got chosen but obviously happy it did :)
