Flickr

I see flickr is set for another price hype to next year..£54 ! getting Ridiculous now ?
Too ridiculous for me Kev, I'll let them cull the 30,000+ photos I've got on there (not all are public, just extra storage).
It seems when they cull it down to 1,000 they won't do new in/old out so that'll pretty much be my Flickr activity done with, just leaving the same old 1000 there.

It's been that price for about a year. My account is cancelled and I'm waiting to see if I get the same discount offer some others have at around £33.

I don't subscribe to Pro Flickr, I just use the free version. Which is fine as I only use it for hosting, to share images on this forum. The only niggle I have with that is, when deleting images from Flickr to keep me under the 1,000 limit it in effect removes them from this forum.

Loads will disappear on forums and elsewhere.

What’s the odds on making multiple accounts ? And I only use it to upload on here

I just made a secondry account. Easy enough with a different email addy (y) I`m just gonna re upload my toy pics to that one, and keep the original as is.

As far as I'm aware unless things have changed since the take over it's perfectly ok to have multiple free accounts.

Even Flickr seem fine with it.

It’s a bit like the screen prices on cars ,if you wait long enough the price comes down

I know money is tight for some, but it’s a hair over £1 a week. That seems pretty reasonable for a system that allows you to upload, share and get the stats etc of views. I don’t consider myself anywhere near a good photographer, but given how much I’ve spent on gear and photo apps/software over the years it seems pretty good value.

SimonH. Putting it that way you have a very compulsive argument. Very much the same applied when Adobe made their Photoshop subscription only. I took them up on what was a special offer for around £7.99 a month or just under £96 a year. It has increased a little in the following 4 years or so to £9.98 a month. or a gnats whisker under £120 a year.

Looking at it another way, a full version bought outright would cost about £600 but that is it. There are no updates until a new version or 'to be paid for' update disc became available after a number of years, or an updated upgrade that could be linked to the older full version -at a cost With the subscription service the updates are amazingly regular and keep the programme 'on the ball'. £10 a month would only buy at most 3 pints or a half decent bottle of wine.

Going back to the original topic - Flickr, I have cleared out my old images entirely and am uploading some of the old ones but with new ones alongside, it will be a good while before I reach my limit of 999 and only then it will come under consideration again.

This is a good long read. I'm fairly new at this and I was looking for a photo-sharing site. This article convinced me that Flickr is where I should be and that, while they're happy to host us for free, we should probably be pitching in for storage and upkeep if we want this project to succeed.

"The rise, fall and resurrection of Flickr"

Used to be Flickr 'Pro' for years but did not renew last year as only wanted it for the BB Code.
I put the money towards a personal website (Wix) where I can upload as many images/gbs as I like.
www.graemehutson.co.uk (Please note the Magic Show info if you're planning a wedding ).
It's much more fun than Flickr.
(Now have 530 images out of the 1000 allowed free on Flickr, however it won't let me upload anymore now, presuming gb allowance is used up).

Might only be a pound a week but if I add all the pounds here and pounds there for hosting and editing it all adds up.

I had Pro- then binned it-I use the free account now and delete older images on a regular bais

I only use flick to stick images on the inter web :)

Don’t overlook the two months free Lightroom subscription. It just adds more time onto your Adobe package.

The one that springs to mind is 500pix. Also Smugmug, or create a “page” in Facebook. There will be many others.

I guess what I'd like is something that is as user friendly ie albums, groups etc and the easy cut and pasting of bb code for sharing etc.

Is there a viable (other than having your own website) alternative to flickr?

Actually I am considering a website of my own. It has been at the back of my mind for a long, long time but have put it off again and again. It will not be a substitute for a membership of a forum such as this one because I enjoy the interaction between various members. The benefit for me is I would have full control of what I upload.

I act as webmaster for retired professionals website and to be honest uploading even a simple word text was a nightmare, never mind photographs. The was a change when we began to accept advertisements and they came in thick and fast in all formats. One of our members has retired from his job as an IT specialist (he owned the company) He looked at the set up (Wordpress) and created a shortcut to bypass the otherwise time consuming process to upload text and images. Don't ask me what he did, technically it is beyond me. The same shortcut is used to delete the out of date advertisements, so when I load a new one, the old one is automatically deleted. It makes my life a lot easier.

Out of curiosity how much annually is a quite simple website likely to cost. I leave that to our treasurer for the site I manage.

I have a web hosting account at unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk and it's less than £4 a month and you can have unlimited websites on it.

I am considering going Flickr pro as Flickr is the only social platform I use now, well except for my website.
However going pro doesn't really offer anything, I'd be paying just to keep Flickr alive, which I don't mind.

but you also gain unlimited hi-res storage for around 80p a week I have over 7 thousand images on there and it still surprises me how many likes I get on years old images , I have also had just under 10 million views over the years and wouldn't want to lose that stat ..
the added bonus is if you leave them all on there for long enough some idiot will come along and uplift one or two , then you can sue them for image theft via somewhere like pixys.com which has netted me quite a few grand over the years .so a win win situation if your lucky .. had a few very nice 3 and 4 figure payouts over the years

You also get a couple of months towards your Adobe subs, if you use it.

Those are only useful if you will use them. Pretty sure I'm not alone in NOT wanting either of those dubious benefits.

I let my pro status lapse, but there were no inducements to sign up again, so I just started another free account. The old one still has 1725 images since reverting in November.

Don't forget that if you have an Adobe subscription you get a free website and storage so you can upload photos to that and share them here from there.

yeah there's a part of me wants to sign up for the storage and the sharing ability and keeping the account alive etc as @the black fox mentioned back in January, I do have adobe subscription and know theres the option of sharing from there but its more than simply sharing to here alone I guess.
more thought needed. Certainly if there was a discount code it would sway me to try it for a year.
