I have been trying to use my nikor 50 mm lens. I know that you have to focus this manually but could some one please explain in an easy how I know when in focus instead of just pot luck

which 50mm lens version do you have and what camera are you using it on?

if you have it, enable 'rangefinder' in the menu and look up in the manual as to what it does and how it works.

failing that, when your subject is in focus a small green light will appear in the view finder.

depending on which 50mm lens I have to express a little suprise your camera won't auto focus with it. Have you check the camera/lens settings would be my first question? only you might just have it set on manual.

d3100 doesn't have an inbuilt focus motor so it relies on the lens having a motor for af. The nifty fifty doesn't have a motor though, so only auto focuses on more expensive nikons.

Thanks Ram. Not knowing that particular camera I wasn't aware about the lack of an inbuilt motor.
