For the 'younger' members of TP....

Sad thing is, I was about to post saying 'Hi, I'm a young one', but realised that I'm not any more. I'm 28 on Tuesday. Not really young any more

 Thats still young!

Oh btw... For any photography A-levelers ... what'd you think of this years theme? Rhythms and Cycles...

19 years young, hitting 20 in May this year!
Started taking photography seriously about 2 years ago, but i'm only now starting to get more of my own equipment - I made do with mum's 400D, 18-55mm & 75-300mm for ages. I've recently bought the nifty fifty, wireless triggers & flash and a battery grip (the only battery we have nearly died on me during a track photography day! :bonk:)
Next on the list? 70-200 F4L

Education wise... I did maths, physics and DT Systems & Control at A Level! I never thought I had a creative bone in my body until I started snapping with the 400D. I'd spent a couple of years prior to the 400D using photoshop, trying to be artistic, but I wasn't moving forward as such. Now I'm being creative with stuff i've created, and I've learnt a hell of a lot more. Hopefully going to uni this sept/oct to study Digital Media Development (quite a stark contrast to my A Levels, but there's a story behind that!)

So, that's me! (y)

I'm 26. I have enjoyed taking photos from a young age but I took photography A-leve as something a bit different to the ones I took in Physics and Electronics. I really enjoyed A-level photography and, hope I don't sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet here, I was quite good at it and got grade A! I was very lucky to have amazing teachers who really tried to encourage the 2 or 3 of us who took it seriously to go beyond the normal courswork. They tought us a lot of extra skills. (this was in the days of 35mm only!)
I didn't do much after college due to cost of film printing but got myself a 400D when they came out and have taken it seriously since then. Now I'm about to get a new 7D.

On the whole my friends think photography is really cool and a lot of them also take amazing pictures. I guess it depends what people you are around. I don't mix with real "arty" crowds but my friends are generally a bit more alternative.

I guess photography can be seen a "geeky" but it's a pretty in depth hobby compared to some. Think of all the things you have to learn and how you have to learn all your gear to get the best out of it. I think that's a lot of the fun.
Saying that, one of my other hobbies is aviation, and I plan to spend my working life as an officer on cargo ships so I guess I'm a geek anyway. (y)

I'm 21 and been into photography for a little over a year, not been on any courses or anything like that, though. If I'm making a living from photography by the time I'm 25 I'll be over the moon and I certainly think it's achievable. :)

I,m 40 this year, but apparently life begins at 40 so bring it on:boxer:

im 26. been taking photographs using DSLR for three to fours years. setup my own company as part time venture last july!.

do to death in family managed to buy some L lenses etc. parent very supportive even got my dad into it.

Great thread, looks like there are quite a few of us. Maybe a meet is in order...

I am 18 currently on my gap year but doing an Engineering degree, will hopefully get involved with the photography side of things at Uni. I started when I was 13 and shooting for the local paper when I was 15, so hopefully I will get back into sports.

I'm 20 and like a few have said I've had a bit of stick for being so into photography from people my age AND the elder generation. Saying that I've made some great friends through photography too :)

EDIT: Oh and I've been taking photos for about 5 years :)

i hope you dont really believe that ,,,eyesight starts going ,,bones ache more ,more night time trips , and , errr what was i saying??

My theme is obsessions and passions... im doing A2 though

Sounds like a good theme, let us know how you get on with it! :)

Out of curiosity.. Where do you draw the line between young and.. 'Mature' photographers?? ;) tehee!

 I honestly thought this would have been brought up earlier on in the thread! I believe the line is drawn between 'young' and 'mature' at peoples own discretion. Hahaha, just to keep on the safe side... Like I've said, you're only as old as you feel! :D

Both of my parent turned 40 last year, and both have been fine... I do get called different names sometimes off my mum, but surely thats expected sooner or later! <- I never said that! :D

i'm 20 and get jip from mates for being into photography...all think it's weird, and the fact i'm not at uni drinking myself into a £30k debt....the more mature (mentally) of my friends accept my photography, appreciate the time ££££ and effort i put into it and comment on it!

I haven't had stick from anyone I don't think.. I removed myself from certain groups of friends for the sake of my own sanity though, and I've felt a lot better for it too :)

I'm 24 (and female, for whoever asked!), if people think you're a geek for being into photography you should try being a photography geek who's also a mathematician for a living! haha not too many dinner party invites coming my way :D

LOL, I know how that feels, try being into photography, ex-IT Constultant/backup specialist and now Sales Controller in the motor industry (tarred with car salesman brush) (y)

Know how you feel :D

Thats the thing... I study maths, physics and geography too!

Ah never mind... we can have our own parties!

working towards a masters degree in electronics :p

Funny as all my mates love the idea I am into photography, I think its because they then get loads of "cool" pictures on myface.

There seems to be loads of people into the hobby, about 4 people where I work (small company) and a at least 10 from college.

hey, im 19, i get what you mean. I am at uni and most of my closest friends find it hard to believe i am into photography. It doesnt bother me. Its a fun and worthwhile thing to do!!!

I'm only 21 years old. I kind of fell into photography during the long summers at University. Since I graduated last year, and only being in a temporary job due to the recession I have really took photography on as a hobby. Having no previous qualifications, experience or interest in photography (to be frank) I have been spending my spare time the last eight months teaching myself the ins and outs (thanks to tips from magazines, podcasts, and reading through this forum). It's a shame I didn't look into studying photography at college and university, but I enjoy the challenge of the trial and error involved in teaching yourself. Shame my friends and family to be honest having got the same interest or passion - so it greats to come on a forum like this with similar like-minded people.

I am 25 I'l be 26 this May and started to get into photography last year in the summer after buying my own compact camera I was only going to take photographs at car shows. And a few of my car to build a portfolio of it. I started to go to a couple of places near where I live and took photographs there and not of the car. So last September I bought a DSLR I have not had any stick of any one around my age as yet. Why do I have to have two expensive hobbies? lol.

I will be 25 in may this year, been into photography for a long time but only started taking it seriously for about a year and a half...:)

20 here, nearly 21. Had no idea there were so many younger people on here tbh

21 and been interested in photography for roughly one year, owned my DSLR for roughly 8 months. I got my SLR for getting more creative with photos when I was traveling, although I haven't managed to do much since I've been spending all my money on equipment. Roll on the summer, USA and Thailand!!

Old enough but to young to care. In other words im 17. :)

19 here, 20 in may. I've had my dslr for about a year, been shooting with dad's old slr for a while but never thought I would be doing anything photography related until last year(or maybe year b4)when I dropped out of IT. Parents weren't too happy but now they know I'm serious, I'm doing a btec in photography at a college, really want to get into uni but as I didn't study art or anything related in school they wouldn't let me in :(
like many have said, some people don't realise how important photography really is and that there is a degree for it and since the beginning of my course 4/5 students have dropped out, we're about 10 now. Looking forward to starting uni and maybe being around like minded individuals, I would also like to squeeze in graphics design and/or languages in my study, let's see how that goes...

Thread record here:

I'm 14. I take pictures for the papers, local and national (Scotsman, The Sun etc). Started up a little picture agency with a friend, and also run a news website with other youths in Scotland.

:eek::eek:

sometimes get a bit of stick at college for being passionate and enthusiastic about photography.
:)

they think im a bit mad. They just don't understand.

I my friends dont seem to think it is as interesting as i do either :/

LOL - I hate to break this to you, but they'll probably be saying the same when you're all old farts too. Most people I know glaze over at the mere mention of white balance or aperture.

So what are you doing next Saturday night? :naughty:

I've got shirts older than most of the people in this thread

Im 19 and so do I, got to love the vintage. Currently on a gap year traveling and although iv been into photography for a couple of years before i came away i seemed to be stuck in a rut of just doing sports photography which did seem to get a bit boring. But now im away im trying all sorts, landscapes being the most popular (New Zealand has some of the most amazing views iv ever seen). However im just wishing id brought a bit more kit with me.

Most of my friends don't really have a problem with my photography hobby, although i do live a pretty normal teenage life outside of my hobby, partying and slobbing about. Plus having friends in all walks of life gives me so much scope for subjects. I have people i can go mountain biking with, friends who are so photogenic its unreal. Plus playing so many different sports they all want my skills which is cool.

Joe
