Hi,

I found a pretty good review of of a pre-production model HERE

Mike.

is it me or did the wedding pics look a little 'weak'? i know its off the topic, but ive such beautiful work in the forum that those sample shots didn't really stand out for me.

Ill try and keep this short as it's a bit off topic, but what do you think you were looking at? Did you read the article. It was examples of how the camera handled the conditions not a portfolio of the togs work so the pictures where chosen on very different merits to norm. Did you look at the real portfolio on the site?

Nice bit of kit that - the really stand-out comment was this:

The quality of the files from this camera makes me believe that we are finally at the stage where we can buy a DSLR and know it will produce stunning results for many years to come - the necessity to upgrade won't as great as it has been in previous years.

And that's the real benefit of this camera (and the Nikon D3, D3x and S models)...

whilst the performance at high ISO looks good, it doesn't look realistically good enough to print or present to a client. I bet it is super at 400 / 800 mark though

Oh i`m not too sure about that. He does state that he was "trialling" it and rather than no image, a noisy one is surely better than nothing at all.If you pixel peep any camera, wether a D3/D700 or the Canon equivilants, then we could all pick fault. The simple fact is that 99% of people don`t. We are our own worse critics and sometimes we go way OTT.

The results look pretty good to me.

Its interesting though to develop on what Richard is saying. I totally agree with arkady that a camera that allows to do something previously impossible is fantastic but i think its got to be used correctly.

Jeff was shooting for a bride and groom in the tests. The bride is not going to be interested in grain, low light, the photographers problems etc etc, just how she looks in the photographs. The question has to be asked if she would prefer a shot taken like Jeffs where the grain structure makes her skin look blotchy or whether slamming a flash on and balancing it with the background at a lower iso would have been prefereable....

I will often shoot a wedding without flash at all but if the conditions dictate I will use flash.

I like Jeff but I was concerned when he announced he was going to trial the mk4 at a live wedding........

I didn't realise this was Jeff Ascough who'd done this test when I looked at this review last night. He's one of the best wedding photographers in the world and specialises in a style using ambient light only, so high ISO quality is very important to him

His camera of choice is the 5D2 and it looks like the 1DIV definitely lived up to the hype

Without going back and reading again, i`m pretty sure he took other tried and tested bodies as well, though I may be wrong.Either way, the camera looks capable.

I cant wait to get one and try it out at a daull lit football match.... Stadiums where I currently use a 1dmkIII with iso 6400 f2.8 and shutter 250-320 on a 300 lens... thats extreme conditions...You can't stop the ball or a fast moving player... keeper rate is more like 1/10.

I cant wait to see how the mkIV performs and i will be showing pictures as I know some of my mates want to see..

Simmilar to the OP.... I hope the pics are judged on the cameras capabilities in the otherwise almost impossible conditions... and not as a portfolio shot :)

I was at Jeff's presentation at the Canon Islington event, and he was enthusiastic about the camera. He's lucky to get demo stuff to work with, and it'll be really interesting to see the full reviews and testing when the cameras become freely available.
I'll be particularly interested in comparisons between the 1D4 and the 7D particularly as regards autofocus performance. I realise that there is a large price differential, but for some, eg wildlife, I suspect the effective reach with the 1.6 crop will be very appealing.

I'm convinced that if Canon want to remain in the game they need the MkIV to be very, very good - and it should be just that.

However, I'd probably reserve judgement when someone slightly more independent gets their paws on it. These "tame pros" aren't going to say anything negative - in fact they have probably signed a piece of paper in blood to that effect....

One only has to look at some of Andy Rouse's 'reviews' on various bits of equipment to see the truth in that...

Why? He clearly states he took the Mk4 only to trial it and used his normal bodies for the wedding shots he needed, then used the Mk4 for a few test shots.

Small lotery win needed, The high ISO image quality is stunning.
