I've had an iPad for about a month now and I must say that I'm loving it. Using it a great deal more than I thought that I would (in fact I'm using it now). Good luck to Archos but I think that they will struggle to take over this market.

It does look good (cant see the modem in the tech specs though?), just wish they would put some decent storage on them, same goes for the ipad.

this does look interesting but one annoying thing is the fact you have to pay for codecs, the reason i got rid of my archos player thingy years ago!

Defo doesnt have 3.5g you have to pair it with "your 3.5g phone"

Still at £300 its a good start

i thought they were called codecs? basically, i had to pay for the chance to watch something in a certain format which i wasnt too keen on.

hmmm

was just told that in November there will be new tablet with Android specially made for Pc World and Currys ....

lets wait then as it may come with tegra2 :)

aren't they a lot cheaper though?

and i'm presuming they'll possibly be able to run more than one app at a time and also aren't some available in a more compact size?

I would love an i-pad but I can't quite justify the price when another small amount of money would get me a macbook, something I would use a lot more!

for £300 or less I would be more tempted though.

Funny all the people who bashed the iPad at launch coming out with how great these new tablets are. (Not aimed at anyone in particular) They do the same thing in a similar way yet as they are not iPad are claimed to be amazing.

I think Apple are an amazing company just as I think Microsoft are. The one thing I do dislike about Apple is their pricing - just about everything they sell bar the cheapest iPods are simply out of the average person's price bracket. £1000 for a desktop computer or laptop? Half that for a tablet? By the time you've saved up your money, they've brought out something different in its place, and added £100 more.

For what an iPad costs, it's not surprising many people are ambivalent. If it cost half of what it did, I for one would certainly be more interested. Apple's crazy pricing is also why I run OS X on non Apple hardware.

Yeah but surely the samsung is on oversized galaxy etc.

£429 cheapest iPad. Runs more than one app at a time too. Dn't get those that bash the iPad not bashing all the competitors too.

for me it was the price of it for what it did or didn't do that made me think it was cack

main thing about competing units for me was price

i thought the ipad was 1 app at a time only? did they release a firmware update or something? (can't really say i keep up with developments) :)

I was thinking about iPad to be honest, but that was at time when it had no multitasking....and I sad to myself I will wait for something similar that will have it.

for over a year Im a Android user so Android tablet would be better for me then iPad ...
but on the other hand I would like win7 tablet :)

I was excited for Samsung Tab but once Ive heard it is only 7" I wasn't anymore. and then the price burrowed it even deeper...

maybe, but only maybe I can end up with iPad if there will be nothing for me on the market by the end of the year/january ... and not because it is apple (for some people thats the most important factor)

Macs are comparable with high end PC's which fall into the same bracket, same as Macbook is not comparable to a £400 Laptop, think high end Sony or Dell and you are looking at the same price.

iPad at £429 is a lot, but although I don't have one, everyone I know who has loves it.

I personally have a problem with the people who buy something Apple, just because it is Apple. Annoys the hell out of me the trendiness attached to it. I don;t care what it does it's apple and apple are cool, so I want one.

Just the fact that so many people bashed the iPad and now sing the praises of the competition which in reality will do the same thing, with a similar processing power and are not that far away in price.

It depends on what it will run though :)

An ipad is pretty useless for me with no flash and no way to work with my database, it essentially becomes a large photo viewer and web browser (again no flash though)

If a competitor tablet is released then I will happily get one so long as it does what I need. It's just a case of needs over wants and I have to justify the use I get out of it as it's not a toy (gadget) but a business tool for me.

never would have seen this turning into an archos vs ipad thread..

apparently the google tablet is going to blow everything currently on the market out of the water.

id hazard a guess archos werent running android at the time.. ;)

almost like when you mention android phones ....

but no one knows when they will release it....next year but there is no exact date ...

true. the archos does look good.. the specs are pretty handy, the price appeals more than the ipad and i know and like the feel of android so id be more inclined to buy one. however i feel like i want one but i dont know what for that my phone or laptop currently cannot..

its like new gadget envy or something..

hehe gadget envy...we all have it...or at least I do :D

If eventually I would get a tablet, I would sell my 13inch laptop (it is really light with amazing battery life but tablet would be even easier to carry around ...

I don't care about who it is made by, just this thread

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=199257&highlight=ipad&page=10

So many people slagged off the ipad and yet suddenly sing the praises of these new tablets.

Not making it an iPad verses anything argument. Just point out the hypocrisy that has happened over the iPad style device being pointless and will never sell to how great everything is when it is in this style.

Ok,some have changed their minds. But this topic is about tablets other then Apple one.
Not even Samsung one :)

Everyone knows that iPad was the first on the market so it is obvious others will compete
No one said anything bad about iPad in this thread ....yet ;)

no one in this thread.

I said that about some members that posted in thread quoted by Carl earlier....I am not judging anyone, as I do not care....

lets go back to talk about android tablets :) or win7 ;)

I would like win7 for some applications I run...but could live without them....I think

Onikami mentioned another tablet that will be anounced nxt month...the advent one...even cheaper then Archos :)

time will show :)

Wasn't aimed at your post :)

Trust me, I am not the coolest person - but we have two iPads, they are great. I have yet to find too much that you cannot do on them, certainly I can link to databases and there is other tech other than flash. Not yet been a major problem.

I get the arguments about big iPhones, it does not suit everyone but nor will any tablet probably. I also understand the Apple expense - but it does do what it does very well. I look forward to seeing what the competition does to try to break into the iTunes/iPad market, but from what I have seen of the Android market place, it still has a way to go.

What will the new Archos do that the iPad does not? Will it end up as a cheap sort of iPad?

it will run Android ?

dont think it will end up as a cheap iPad. None of the other tablets will do. They are just similar devices.
like windows and linux...

lets just say they target different people/different markets. (android users)

itunes are similar to amazon mp3

iPad market ? it is called app store is int it ?

we are again pulled in to wrong direction here...

Okay, I'll rephrase my question. What will a tablet device running Android give you that iOSX does not?

App Store/iTunes are pretty much the same cartel thing. I use Amazon/Tesco or iTunes for music - wherever it is cheapest. Apps are solely from iTunes.

If you want cheap tablets there are some to be had running Android already. I was not being critical, trying to flame or steer away from the thread - just interested.

Chris

BTW: The iPad does not yet multitask. That is supposed to be a free update in November

lets say they will do the same.(dont want to argue if more ...or less as it is a matter of person using it and I never used OSX device for more then few minutes including iPad )

I liked iPad but want something with Android - system i am familiar with .

the coming tablets will be running tegra 2 chip that will give great performance with low battery consumption. most of them will have usb hub, hdmi ...

what about cheap tablets ? they are cheap...and not good to use as running old android and they have many faults...

if we say iPad is perfect device for apple users, we Android users are waiting for our device.
everyone wants to be happy :)

At present it is one app at a time, but when iOS 4 is released it will multi task like the iPhone

300 Pounds is still quite a lot, specially for something like this (can't imagine so much use for it to justify the money). Think I will just stick with my phone, the screen size is not that bad :)

The problem with a lot of these newly announced tablets vie notice is a). the sheer screen size. I mean, 7" is pretty poor to be honest. If you want totally portable, get a smartphone, more bulky get a laptop. That's one place the iPad fits in perfectly.

b). is the weird form factor many are going for. The samsung is a widscreen if I recall.....definately restricts it's usefulness. Now, as I use my iPad in landscape mode almost exclusively, why is widescreen any good? Just means I'll have chopped off a load off the bottom of my webpages.

Couple those two points, and I'm immediately turned off regardless of price.

Win 7 isn't a touch OS though, so it's essentially a netbook without a keyboard.

It'll be interesting to see what battery lif is in the real world too, as the eval slates I've seen have all performed very poorly in this area. It's TechEd Berlin in a few weeks, so I'll see what it's like then.

Maybe thats what all tablets should be like...netbooks/notebooks in small case without keyboard with proper OS installed....

And yes, battery is one of the most important factors...

Have you seen new cpu/gpu from AMD announced few days ago ?

it needs less then 1W to run :) and it is microscopic :)

it converts surprisingly well with the tablet options turned on though.
