I have a problem. My laptop has died. It's fine, boots up fine etc, but the power inlet is knackered so I can't charge it. I've been quoted upwards of £200 to repair the damage, and it's not worth it. I bought a new laptop anyway (Toshiba Satellite L450D) but there's stuff on the HDD of my old one that I need for work...a lot of stuff

So, is it possible to remove the HDD and put it in an external HDD case and use it as an external HDD to recovewr the data? And then format it and use it as an external? I need and external drive anyway.

Thanks in advance, I know there are some real wizards here!

I took the 2 hard drives out of my desktop pc and had a trip to Pc World were I bought a hard drive caddy mine were SATA drives cost me about £18, would have thought you should be able to do the same.

Cool, I'd hoped it was that simple! Just looking for specs on the old lappy to find out what type the HDD is.

Don't suppose anyone could tell me what type it is? From an Acer Aspire 5520.

With out a doubt there are lots of cheaper ways to do this ( personally I have a server with 2 raided 1Tb drives just for the data )....

Can I suggest these though ?

For the novice these are an ideal device and you'll be able to reuse moving forwards...

I took it out, it is SATA, and the caddy cost me 8 quid off amazon. Not too sure about the mounting though, it has two small flanges with screw holes in by the terminals, and none in the side (like on a normal 3.5" HDD).

the screws are on the top, mine has a caddy that goes over the top and screws into the top screws on the hd and a set further out on the lappy chassis

Ah well, if all else fails I'll gaffa tape and cable tie the beggar in there :D
