FREE MOVIE MAKING/ANIMATION SOFTWARE

Does anyone know of any that i can use?
im basically doing a stop/start animation using my video camera for my art project and i would like some software that i can use to create it with. does anyone have any personal recommendations?

Windows Movie Maker, just set up a slide show with no transitions. My son has done loads of stop motion movies of lego using it
