I'll be taking my XP laptop to a friends wedding next week to backup my shots. I'm not the main photographer but wanted to use it as a free practice.

I know I could copy the files and trust they're OK but I'd like to be able to scan through them just to mate sure they're not corrupted etc.

Is there a free RAW viewer for XP?

there is also a raw viewer on the microsoft site for xp

can you take RAW and JPG at the same time
preview the JPGs

All of the above recommendations have the same drawback - they're not looking at the full raw file but the embedded jpeg (or the separate jpeg if you shoot both). That's not really going to tell you for sure if the raw file is corrupted or not.

FastStone does have an option to view an image derived from the actual raw data, but it's very slow (about 20 seconds per image on my netbook). And most software will be about the same speed.

I use FastStone and have no speed issues with it.

Are you viewing the embedded jpeg (the default setting) or the full-size raw (needs to be altered in the settings menu)? Even on my Quad-Core processing PC it takes 5 or 6 seconds to show a full-size raw.

Ahhh... ok, that's my new thing learnt today. I guess it depends what the OP is after as to whether they need the full resolution RAW view. I notice if I press "a" key then it toggles to full RAW view from the embedded preview. Cheers G.

Yup, if they want to check for composition the embedded jpeg is perfect. It's also not too bad for checking lighting, focus etc (well, it'll show obvious duds). But it's not going to tell you if part of the rest of the raw file is corrupted, which was one of the OP's goals.
