Freeing up space on Mac HD

In order to free up space on my imac hard drive, I've decided not to store any images on it, and keep them all on External HD's.
So if I just delete the images from the imac by putting them in the trash, will that actually free up space, or do I have to do something else?

Vaguely recall reading something about the trash does not actually remove them

Also depends if you are using iPhoto, as that will also have a copy of the images in its own library as well and has its own trash can that should empty.

How much space do you need on the imac? Unless it's a small hard drive would not have expected photos to have used up that much space unless we're talking thousands of raw files?

I store all my images on external drives, It's amazing how fast they can fill up especially when using RAW. Opt for a FW800 drive if you can. A lot faster than USB, and you can daisy change the drives.

If you need more space have a look at removing a lot of the foreign languages. That can save a few Gb's
