From Canon to Nikon

Bit of an open question, but, as a Canon user, how long would it take me to acclimatise to a Nikon body? I don't intend to move to Nikon, I just want to learn how to use one.

Also, how much would a Nikon body suitable for my learning cost?

I know, it's a strange question ;)

bout half an hour? :P

quite a lot longer to get the /extreme/ familiarity that you need for being able to have it pretty much as an extension of yourself, but they're really pretty simple, and end of the day, camera's not much more than a box with a lens...

Thanks Dave. I suspected as much. But what about terminology? e.g high speed sync in the Canon world, is that called something else in the world of Nikon?

What he said.
I played with a few Canon bodies on my travels and while I loathe them intently for the hideous ergonomics, if you held a gun to my head I'd be proficient in 30 minutes or so.

A fair bit longer to be 'intuitive' with one though...

Probably the hardest thing you'd need to get used to is the bayonet lens mount.
Nikon turns clockwise to unmount and anti clockwise to mount a lens.
The menus are logically laid out.

Thanks Rob. Unlike you to be straight to the point ;)

Haing done it I'd agree. Took me a couple of hours to go through the manual, figure out how I wanted them set up and off I went. As for using them and getting used to the subtleties, I'm good with them (as in comfortable) after six months and now I find it difficult to remember how to do things on Canons! But then, that's my age :)

We aim to please...

If I'd bought an A1 when I was a kid instead of an F2 you'd be hearing a different tune, no doubt...

Nope - you'd have been shooting Nikon and complaining that the A1 developed the dreaded cough!

lol...I did actually own one for about 4 months til I dropped it in 20ft of sea water in the South of France...Spent three hours diving for it, during which time I sobered-up and wished I hadn't started - but by then I had an audience, so had to persevere.
Rinsed it in fresh-water, let it dry out for a day and sold it immediately on my return to the UK...ahem...:naughty:

I will never trust this man again :)

So, it didn't develop the cough - just pneumonia

I have been Canon for 20 years.. now a Nikon 300s man. I Still have not worked out the 20,000 extras that no man needs compared to what the Canon had on the memus.

Still I only ever shoot manual or Aperture pri. although i love the the 3d auto focus.... well cool. Predicts fast moving objects coming towards you.. Well good.

You not beat Ultra Sonic lens though... They will be sadly missed.

Nikon ergonomics win hands down IMO, I can't even fathom how to turn my mates 5D II on lol!
