Fuji x100

I totally agree with the support for the X100 above! Owning the Fuji was a real lightbulb moment for me, the sudden realisation that I needn't carry a bag full of DSLR kit to capture quality images. In fact, of the images chosen by my local pub to be on display/sale, 4 of the 5 were from the X100.

I've just recently ditched my entire DSLR setup (Nikon D600) for a Fuji X-E1 and a couple of lenses - an upgrade I should have done months ago! However, my X100 is here to stay, it's a camera I just love to use despite it's (numerous) quirks.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I went with an x100 from the forum here.

My first impression is . . . quirky, but amazing. Yeah, shocker, eh? Just the same response that 90% of the people in this thread had :p

I love the viewfinder. everything else is just gravy on top of that. Remembering to put the ND on before I take an over-exposed shot wide-open will take some time to get used to. AF performance is perfectly fine for what I need. The menus are long-winded and annoying, but not worth paying £500 to fix. And from my first quick few snapshots, the IQ is going to be glorious.

Lovely bike Dave. A10 Rocket ?

I still keep making the same mistake by not activating the ND filter. I've resorted to keep the picture review on just in case

I must be one of the few people who doesn't mind the menus at all.

twist, Andrew, Dave. Thanks very much.

Ever get the feeling that the more research you do for a camera, the more confused you get? I had more or less settled on the Fuji x20 as my light carry around camera, but am now being tempted by the X100.

I'll be very grateful if someone could give a bit of guidance on the merits of the X100 v the newer X20.

The X100 has significantly better image quality and if you use a viewfinder as your first choice then the X100 may be a no brainer. However, the X20 is much more flexible with the zoom, has a better button layout, much faster autofocus amd is smaller.

If you are happy with the image quality of the X20 then I would go for that but if top end image quality and a fantastic viewfinder is your priority, the X100 is probably the one.

Autofocus is much better on the X20 though.

If I had to have only one of them and no other camera, I would go for the X100 personally. (But I have upgraded to the X100s recently because of the minor quirks).

Thanks for taking the time to reply Colin, much appreciated. Will have a further look and compare size, but the zoom function on the x20 will be handy.

Image quality on the x20 looks to be good enough for me, but still tempted by the x100. It may well just come down to what one is more attractively priced on the day that I choose to purchase.

Cheers,
David

Recently joined the x100 crowd (thanks cambsno) - loving it so far.

Some zone focused street shooting:

A recent trip to the garden centre - the DR and colours are impressive.

...continued...

Main reason I went for the x100 was the high ISO capability, I was not disappointed:

I find that anything up to 1600 is great. 3200 very usable. 6400 ok for web.

I just purchased an X100 today! :D

Hopefully will get out and use it tomorrow. Out of the box I found the indoor test shots I did to be very impressive even with an auto white balance and indoor lighting everything appeared natural and sharp.
I didn't go too high with ISO either. 400 - 800.

Love some of the street shots in this thread (y)

Just bought a used one off here pretty excited to have a camera that I can take anywhere as the 6D gets a bit heavy. I can't believe the leather case is £100 but got one anyway as I haven't seen many that are full coverage and removable to half case.

I find when using auto-DR the camera tends to under-expose when shooting raw to preserve the highlights, but can easily bring it back in lightroom.

Continues to impress, I love the the fuji colours.

I've gone from forgetting to put the ND filter on, to forgetting to take it off. Managed to spoil the last bunch of photos I took yesterday by accidentally taking them at 1/15s (my own fault, of course. I also had manual ISO on)

I'm also struggling with framing in the OVF. I know I could just switch to the EVF, but it's really not the same. I've also noticed as I PP and crop a lot, I should really be moving in closer on most of my shots.

Apart from these niggles, I'm still loving it a week on.

Perhaps I'm mental but just ordered a 100s after a weekend with the 100.... The wife is going to kill me but I have had so much fun with it there isn't any reason not to get the S. My wife has an eos-m and it's miles away from the quality photos I can get with this lovely thing!

I'm really liking the JPG off the camera, been using Std Provia. But did a few comparison shots today, found I prefer Astia, which appears to be in the middle out of the 3.

Which film simulation mode do you all use?

I've been shooting in RAW, but I think I might actually give the film simulation modes a go next time out. It takes an age to write out the RAW on my 30Mb/s card, and I'm thinking that the x100 can probably do a better job of PP than me anyway.

My best mate was my main inspiration for getting an X100, he only ever shot in JPEG and his shots were incredible.
I shoot RAW and JPEG together, sometimes the JPEG will look better than my edited RAW in LR, I always use Velvia though (y)

My BC-65N charger has conked out it seems. So my X100S needs a new juice maker. Anybody tried any 3rd party ones with success? I've seen many us users happily using some.

I have emailed fuji and digitalrev too about the one I already have.

No but I'd be tempted to follow this to make it a bit more portable:

Still having fun with this, got a few weekends away coming up and can't wait to do some more street shooting :)

Saw that hack the other day, loved it. Been trying to find out the name of the part, so thanks! I have located a few on ebay. Actually I tried it with the one i do already have. If it wasn't for my duff fuji charger I'd be able to tell you. I tried the hack with my nikon charger but it kept falling out :bonk:

The fuji charger was better set up to use this hack

Yup, I'm using the plug from my apple charger on the Fuji, and the Fuji lead on my apple charger as its behind a cabinet :)
