Which DSLR has the best dynamic range?

The Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro and S3 Pro scored a 13.5-stop dynamic range on DxO's dxomark.com website, which means they offer the highest in-camera dynamic range of all DSLRs in RAW mode. Dynamic range refers to the amplitude between light and dark details that a sensor can record. High dynamic range is essential for landscape and wedding photographers, but most digital cameras' dynamic range falls short of film.

Nikon's latest DSLRs did well, as did the Sony Alpha 900 (12.3 stops). All scored between 12 and 12.5 stop dynamic range, with the D90 scoring 12.5 stop dyanmic range, the third highest. Most cameras fell in the 11-12 stop range, although a handful were as low as 10 stops.

The top 20:

1. Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro (13.5)
2. Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro (13.5)
3. Nikon D90 (12.5)
4. Sony Alpha 900 (12.3)
5. Nikon D3 (12.2)
6. Nikon D700 (12.2)
7. Nikon D300 (12)
8. Canon EOS 1DS Mark III (12)
9. Canon EOS 1D Mark III (11.7)
10. Pentax K10D (11.6)
11. Sony Alpha 350 (11.5)
12. (tied) Nikon D200 (11.5)
Nikon D40x (11.5)
13 (tied) Canon EOS 50D (11.4)
Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D (11.4)
Nikon D60 (11.4)
14 Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II (11.3)
15 Canon EOS 40D (11.3)
16 (tied) Sony Alpha 100 (11.2)
Samsung GX 20 (11.2)

The DxOMark Dynamic Range ratings are independent, objective test results that were made freely available to the general public this week as a tool to compare digital camera RAW image quality.

Nice to see the D90 comparing favourably against the rest of the competition.

a very interesting site. What surprises me is that the 5DII is not really that much better than the 5D classic in most tests, but the pictures from it look in a different league at ISO 3200. Also the Nikon D700 trumps them both fair-and-square.

Too much emphasis on stats these days....if it gets you the shot then what more do you need? :)

Well the S5 Pro beats everything out there for DR by a long way.

However its not 13.5 stops. Thats just silly.

DxO also makes about the worse RAW converter you can get, so I am a little dubious about these figures.
