Just entered the world of DSLR's with a canon 500d 18-55 lens kit.

I have a friends wedding coming up in 3 weeks and want to use it as an opportunity to learn. (don't worry they have professionals doing the actual wedding photos)

I don't have an external flash and was wondering if it would be worth hiring one and a different lens for the weekend.

Could you recommend a lens suitable and also somewhere reasonable to hire from.

Thanks

Steve.

Trouble with flash is, if ya dont know how to use it well, you can mess up an awfull lot of oportunities.
You should be cool with the kit you have.
you could consider something faster (1.8 or 2.8) if you have the chance to shoot inside the venue.
The classified section of TP has Lenses for Hire in there somewhere.
24-70 2.8 L is one hell of a lens, and wifeys prefered wedding lens.

I would either hire a 17-55 or buy a 50f1.8. One is arguably sharper and close-on a usable stop faster (f2.2) the other being more flexible with the zoom range and image stablisation.

I would buy a flashgun. It was probably the best individual purchase I made and enabled more shooting opportunities than any selections of lenses alone. I reckon if you rent one you will ultimately buy it anyway (infact I got a second one for off camera flash for even more flexibilty).....others may disagree
