The 16-85 DX seems to be the best consumer lens on the DX format, is there something similar for FX, a lens that is optically very good but doesnt have the build quality, the speed and the price tag of a pro lens?

Thanks

Nikon 24-120 VR is the equivalent I guess. Tamron also used to make a 24-135 that was supposed to be a decent lens

I am not sure about the Tamron but I think the Nikon 24-135 doesn't compare to the 16-85 optically.

No, if you are thinking of putting a 24-120 VR on a D700, you'd be better off with an 16-85 VR on a D300. Better combo.

The Tamron 24-135 is excellent on the D700 though, way better than the Nikkor 24-120.

How big do you want to go and how much do you need/want to crop? For a while, I had both a 24-70 f/2.8 Sigma and the 24-120 VR Nikkor. At A4 you could start seeing the advantages of the Sigma over the Nikkor (camera tripod mounted, set to manual) as far as sharpness goes but there was more CA from the Nikkor as well as slightly duller colours. The 24-70 is significantly shorter at the long end.
