Gallery2 customisation

This has been put on the back-burner for a bit recently, but I really want to get it completed.

I worked a layout that I was happy with using CSS. here it is, and here. I (perhaps naively - I'm a complete novice with this stuff) planned on doing all the dynamic stuff myself, but then of course realised that it was a bit beyond me at the moment.

So I installed Gallery2 software, understanding that there were various themes that could be installed, and that you could even use your own custom designs. So I want to use the above design for my Gallery2 installation, but I don't have a clue where to start, or even if it's possible.

I'd appreciate any advice on this :)

call my office in the week. We have quite a bit of gallery 2 customisation experience

some kind of written explanation on the forums would be good richard, how the wrapper system works and all that sort of thing

I see where you are coming from.. However, this is normally such a complex issue, to get a handle on what is needed usually involves a good in depth look at the individual case.

G2 is an odd beast, it uses wierd Smarty templates, which are quite tricky to work with. For support, really the questions are best asked on the Gallery2 forum - found here: http://gallery.menalto.com/forum

However.. If we are talking wrappers - you will be using JOOMLA or MAMBO, which is another system alltogether. Essentially think of a wrapper as just a DIV or frame into which external content is displayed within the CMS system.. Example G1, G1, Forums or any other code that isnt propperly integrated into the CMS system.

Why everyone struggles with wrappers is that althogh displaying the content, the integration is non-existant, and the css is often interfeered with (that is joomlas css plays havoc with the wrapped content

dont forget html wrappers...header and footer stuff

So, what you essentially seem to be saying is that I've not got a hope of doing this by myself! These sort of things are never as simple as they ought to be!

Cheers Richard :) Smarty Wrappers, eh... Is there an easier to understand "gallery" template system which would be more suitable for someone with limited experience to customise as I want to do?

I havent a clue about your experience. As I say - there are some excelent guides over on the gallery2 forums. The templates in themselves are not that hard to work with - the issue is knowing which file does what, and the conceptual step of realising the page you are looking at may have say 40 different files used just to display all of the content

um, experience is next to nothing ;) In fact the two pages linked above are the culmination of all my experience with web stuff. If I can use the forums to work out the answers to your two points then I'm sure I can muddle through the rest. Thanks again

have a go yourself, i had no experience with any sort of websites or html when i started doing stuff for myself, you can pick stuff up really quick, and if you get stuck you can always post and ask here - everyone can benefit that way
