I have used a gaming mouse for exactly the purpose you mention. I have not thought about using the buttons for shortcuts though. When I want to do precise work I reduce the mouse movement to its slowest dpi. I personally have found I get a lot more control that way than I ever could with a tablet.
For me this is my preferred method - others will prefer a tablet.
I use a gaming mouse with 12 odd buttons on it and it's great. It has different profiles (5 i think) and i've setup button profiles for LR, PS, desktop use and actual gaming . Very useful and compliments other input methods (tablet + midi controller).
