Hi

Next week i am planning to go to Jessops in Peterborough to get myself an EOS 1000D + kit lens - current price £329.99

I'd really like it if i could get a case thrown in as well - they are offering one for £24.99 when bought with a camera, any chance i could get this thrown in?

Any other tips, cash or card etc?

Alternately i could go to John Lewis. Any clues?

Many thanks
Christopher

The more you buy, the more of a deal you get.

For example, if you were to buy a filter for the kit lens, a memory card, a case, and, say, a lens cleaning kit, that would total to £375, but they could probably, PROBABLY do it for £335.

Jessops employees do not take kindly to being told you can get it cheaper on the internet. We know you can get it cheaper on the internet, but you pay for the service, and the ability to bring it back to a physical shop and shout at a physical person if something cocks up.

With me, I buy my stuff full price in electronics shops. I don't ask them for offers, or deals. Why should I? I don't order a bunch of stuff on the internet and call them up asking for a free case or anything like that. I don't go into HMV and say "I want to buy 2 DVDs that aren't in the sale or have a 2 for 1 deal, but would you be able to take £3 off one of the DVD's? Considering I'm buying 2..."

Basically, if you intend on buying all the stuff you need, you should be able to get it priced at the same price you'd buy it online, therefore saving yourself hassle and wait.
If you intend on trying to get a free bag and then telling them you'll buy everything else cheaper online, forget it :p

It makes no difference between cash or card. We don't mind!

OK, Thanks a lot. In that case, i see the case is 24.99 when baught with an SLR, would i be able to reserve and collect, AND purchase the case in store?

I would say, another thing.
If they guy/girl who is serving you doesn't have a clue about what they're talking about, just humour them if you're looking to get a deal. Telling them they're wrong will only make them go and tell their manager that you're being rude and that they don't want to do you a deal. I know it's not acceptable, but if it bothers you, after the sale, take the manager to the side and tell him he needs to train his staff!

Yes, but the case is a half price 'when bought with' offer.

Do you personally have any recommendations of accessories i should buy at the time?

Work in retail my self, and constantly get asked, "what can you throw in", or "is that the best price"... what do people expect me to say. No this price is way over, you can save 50% if you buy online. This Martin Lewis idiot and Dont get done get Dom bloke is the main root cause.

Yes if you are buying a few items, we dont mind rounding it down, or if there is something in it for us, again we dont mind doing a bit off, but when people are buying two items, which may be on sale at present time, making little or no money, it just annoys me that they think they can get what they want, and if not demand to speak with the manager, as if my word is no good.

Honestly it really annoys the hell out of me!

Got my 70-200 2.8 VR from there.

They price matched a better price at Jacobs for me, so see what you can do.

I dealt with a chap by the name of Alan.

Dont know if this is any help but i got a 1000d with a kit lens for my mother at christmas from tesco direct for 282 quid and you get the £30 cashback

Don't forget if your going through tesco, get 3% back from quidco as well (y)

Everylittlehelps :D

But buying a camera from Tesco leaves you with absolutely no help, advice or assistance.

Support a camera shop and buy it from somewhere that gives the remotest toss about supplying you with the right product.

Cheers,
James

you say that but your more than likely to get no help from the camera shop you buy it from either... Plus hes already on here which means he has all the help he needs :p:D

Whilst I appreciate not every shop offer the stellar service we would all expect, my point is rather that if everyone just bought their dSLR's whilst they were shopping for their fruit n' veg, then there wouldn't be any specialist Camera Shops left to actually visit!

I'm not completely anti Tesco, but do feel that part of our problem in the High Street stems from people looking for the absolute lowest price on something with no thought for the 'value added' services that a GOOD retailer can offer.

Having worked in retail, that attitude makes me rather sad.

Cheers,
James

I also work in retail and give discounts and deals all the time. I give a good service and am helpful and I expect this in return when I go to other shops.
A lot of shops disappoint me when I go in expecting the sort of service I give, sorry if anybody feels I'm in the wrong expecting a discount on a significant purchase but that's the way it is.

My experience at Jessops has not been good I'm sorry to say. On more than one occasion asking for a Nikon lens has prompted "we have the Canon one", well I'm sorry Jessops person but that Canon lens does not and never will fit my Nikon camera.
I'm sure they do have some competent staff, just I have never found one. My Dad has has a few chats in Jessops stores and it seems they were quite knowledgeable, they just seem to have days off when I go in. I'd be just as well off buying it from Tesco.

The only thing with Jessops' "deals" on accessories is that they tend to be far more expensive than anyone else as this is how they make their money rather than on the actual camera sales. When I bought my D300 I was offered a deal on a Sandisk Extreme III 2gb for "only" £55 instead of £64 - I passed on that and bought the same card elsewhere for £14.....

Agreed - Jesops often have decent prices on the bodies, but the markup on consumables is high.

I'd probably just try to get a deal unencumbered by anything bundled.

Yeah, unfortunately the prices for accessories are nasty. I don't know how we can get away charging £44 on a card that costs £15 elsewhere.
Well, we don't.

The lens cleaning cloths (XL) are great, could get that for £4. Get one of those, seriously.
The lens cleaning kits have a few decent things, could probably get that for £7.
We're doing an energizer rechargeable set for £9.99 with 4 2500mah, which is quite a good deal (always need batteries!), could probably get that for £8.
Apart from that I don't think there's much else.

But if you were to get all that stuff I think you could probably get it for £15 if you asked nicely :p it would give them decent add-on percentages and because they're jessops products, they can discount more.
The case you can backorder, and I think you could probably get it for £20 when bought with. They'll say "But sir, it's already reduced!" and then you say "but it was free last week, a fiver couldn't hurt!"

Then you'll have most of what you need. Get a sandisk extreme 3 4gb sdhc from play for £15 and save your money there. I think we're doing 8gb ultra 2 sdhc for £24.99 if you're desperate, which isn't the worst price in the world.

Why not wait for the closing down sale, can't see them lasting through 2009 in their present form.

I wouldn't be surprised if Digital Depot beats them to it the way their carrying on !

Seriously, are Jessops likely to go under anytime soon? And is there a better retail store i should get it from instead, Jessops is easiest for me though.

I wouldn't worry about it - if you are paying and collecting the stuff, your warranty lies with the manufacturer. If Jessops were to go down then it wouldn't make any difference.

I hope they don't, but they have been struggling for a while - mostly because they have/had far too many shops, too many (variable) staff in many cases and bizzare shop formats that aren't conducive to spending money.

However, they have done some aggressive discounting so should have had a bumper Christmas - with a bit of luck that will tide them through the traditionally quiet time in late Jan/Feb and March. I would imagine that camera sales begin to pick up when the weather starts to improve too.

Cheers,
James

Wonderfully funny joke.
Yes, yes, let's make jokes about people's livelihood and jobs.

This year's christmas was 40% up on like for like sales.

Not funny mate, and I'd appreciate if a little bit of empathy and sensitivity were used where appropriate. You wouldn't find it so funny if you were in the same position.

No, I don't think so. From the conference calls I've listened to this was a very good christmas, and while we've been slowly going downhill, we seem to be on the up for the time being.

It's scary times, I heard Jessops were in trouble about 2 years ago I think, and I think they closed a lot of stores and got away with it.
I don't think many people are secure, every time I go into town more shops are gone. I found it pretty sad that Woolworths got so much support about 2 days too late.
Whatever my experience with Jessops has been, it'll scare the crap out of me if it goes, Jessops staff might be my next customer and I need my customers to have money.

The horrible thing is, if we DO go down the pot, then it will be nigh on impossible to get another job.
Scary times.

As Stephen Colbert said in order to fix the economical crisis, "Right! Let's have another world war!"

Give 'em a bit of time, they've only just come back from the last time! ;)

I see what your saying fabs but there still not doing much about there customer service, and any time i go in there the staff look like they have lost £100 and found a penny, they also keep claiming they price match but whenever i ask they always come up with an excuse not to, if they don't want to price match fair enough i don't have a problem with that, what i do have a problem with is them making false claims :)

TBH I've not been in there since the buy out, but I never had anything but exemplary service when I went in there before. Are you saying that it's gone downhill since, or that you've always had problems with them?

I did have problems with them in the past, the warehouse club wasn't to bad, but i've never really had good service from them overall, they have certainly never price matched anything for me before or after they went belly up, i even went to jessops to get my D300 as i didn't want to give DD the business on an expensive item to be honest, and i just find they seem very miserable when dealing with you, or maybe it's me they don't like

Most of my dealings were with the Warehouse Club, so you may well be right about the "street" shop. They probably didn't like you anyway! :p :D

I think that everyone needs to be sensitive at times like this. I am as hard nosed as the rest but i was saddened to hear that Woolies staff were being shouted at for not being overly helpful or happy in the run in to their closure.

Some of my family work in retail [ for the biggest retailler in the UK] & they have been abused by angry shoppers & my 17 year old daughter had something thrown at her the other day when the self service machine failed to work.

Its a good job that i wasn't in the store at the time.

If you work in retail it must be easy to view you customers as whingers, scroungers & generally unpleasant members of the human race!

They probably still don't :p  i was looking at there website a couple of weeks ago, everything i clicked on i was interested in said out of stock, so out of curiosity i clicked on lots of stuff on there site and it kept coming up out of stock, not sure if to read anything into that but it does seem a bit odd.

To shout at and physically abuse staff for perceived bad service is appalling in any circumstances. I have worked in retail and been on the receiving end and it is very unpleasant indeed, I even barred one "customer" from my shop.

They seem to have more in stock now but, interestingly, some of the prices have risen considerably! Can't see them surviving too much longer. :shake:

I agree with a lot of what you say in principle, but you can't really compare somewhere like woolies to digital depot which is a small company (one shop)that has gone to the wall once already, so given a second chance i would have thought the least they could do is raise a smile when a customer walks in

I went into Jessops last week looking to buy a Nikon D700 and a 24-70 f2.8 lens which is over £2,500 worth of kit. I asked if I could have a bit off as I was buying both and the guy said (I kid you not) "We do not make any money on Nikon equipment but if you have some extra batteries and some filters we 'might' be able to knock a bit off mate"

10 seconds later I was making my way through the door.

Two things here, firstly I am NOT stupid and secondly I am NOT his bloody mate!:nono:

Jessops lost the sale (rightly so) and another retailer a few miles away gained it.
