ok..I un-installed gimp using Control Panel

however "right-click" on an image and in the drop-down list - it still says

"Open with Gimp"

small point but irritating ......how do i get rid of this ?...thanks from PC idiot.....

Open up the registry editor and search for GIMP and delete the key (bit on the right) that says GIMP, may be some stuff on the left but be very careful when playing in the registry...

hmmmmmmmmmmmm ... a safer way ?....:(

Right click the image, select 'properties' & associate it with another programme to open with.

Then if you are brave enough, edit the registry

ok
regedit --- search GIMP
opens
LHand pane says .........CLASSES/giffile/shell/Open with GIMP
RH pane says.....default....REG_S2....value not set

a vague memory - do I set the value to "0"

I'ld backup the registry and then delete the line :D

Can always restore your old registry if anything peculiar happens although from memory I would imagine the worst it would do is not know how to open an image without prompting you first...

Registry is really the way to go with this one... run 'Regedit' and back it up then...

Go to the following key: HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.

Scroll down the list of file extensions to the one for which you want to edit or clear the list.

Click the + to expand OpenWithList.

In the right pane, you should see a list of programs (for example, Word.exe, notepad.exe, etc.).

Click the one(s) you want to remove. Press the Delete key.

If this doesn't remove the program(s) you want to remove, go to: HKEY CLASSES ROOT, scroll to the desired file extension, click OpenWithList, and remove the program there (the settings under HKEY CURRENT USER apply only when your user account is logged on. The ones under HKEY CLASSES ROOT apply to all users).

 ok I'll try this when i have a clear head -- just finished a bottle of Shiraz...:nono:

How did it go, or are you still drinking? :D

Wasn't it Keyser Soze who got rid of the Gimp?

Download CC Cleaner and run it...Not only will it get rid of the key but will clean up your registry and speed up your computer.

I regularly run Wise Reg Cleaner v5 - and it has not removed Gimp from the drop-down list

Is CC Cleaner better/different ?

Derek...still undecided to tackle the Registry with my limited knowledge so will leave it - it's only a small irritation - thanks anyway !

decided to stick with the D40 as per your recommendation - only really interested in landscapes anyway - may treat myself to a Tamron 11-18mm later as I gain more experience

I was indeed interested in a D200 but - got an infraction for commenting in the sale thread for the last one - so kinda taken the edge off that

give me a PM about which camera you will be keeping ...:D.. cheers
