Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is in the right place, but does anyone know of any worthwhile photography courses in Glasgow to show me the basics of getting the most out of my first DSLR?

Thanks

Clare

where abouts in Glasgow? Queens Park has a camera club that starts back up on the 3rd september.

It looks like they offer quite a few good information/training nights.

Depends on the level people are at. CC seems just like a forum, with people of all ages and abilities.

I'm far from Stuffy and the people I met seem ok to me.

Oop, I'm a "she" but thanks for the recommendations...

I did see about the camera club - but it's a bit out for me as I live outside Glasgow...was contemplating a night course, but the only one I could find was an Introduction to Digital Photography at the Met for £88...

Did a search but really surprisingly came up with very little...

where as there may be somewhere nearer?

I should have explained clearer - sorry. I'm in Cumbernauld, so while Queens Park wouldn't be a huge issue, something closer would be my first choice :-)

That's what I get for typing too quickly and pressing the send button before I've read what i've written...lol

The courses at the MET do come highly regarded but it might be worth your while looking for a local camera club as there are a few in and around the glasgow area.

It really depends on what you want to learn, basics, camera settings, lighting, etc etc etc.

I am sure that peeps on here would gladly help answer any questions that you have too.

Clare,

I Googled this Glasgow Metropolitan College. There's much more on Google - I searched for 'Glasgow photography classes' - Easy-Peasy :)

Edit: Sorry I should have added, "By the way, but" :)

I think what I might end up doing is having a practice with what I learn on here, get more of my pics up for the critique (got my first ones just up there tonight  ) and then maybe go to a course once I know the areas I'm more interested in.

The photography club seems like a good idea - maybe even a couple of the specific training nights perhaps...

@BawBee - I did that search but it was while I was at work so may explain why I didn't get a lot through - stoopid internet filters :bang: hehe...I shall do that search again now - thanks! :D

Hi Clare,

There are courses at the Glasgow Metropolitan College and also at Motherwell College. I met the lecturer from Motherwell when I was working at a football match earlier this year, he seemed like a really decent guy!

There are online and open university courses as well, depends on what you're looking for!

Good luck

Dave

I think that is an excellent idea. I have 3 camera clubs quite close to me but don't really have the time for any of them at the moment. I used to be a member of a club years ago and whilst some members have old school ideas it was never an issue and I did learn quite a bit from them.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions - much appreciated...

Guess I'm a tad lost in all the new things there are to learn about this thing - it really is like a whole new language to learn.

he'd be much better off going to a course than a stuffy camera club

You'd think with all the nudie pics artistic photographs he takes that he'd be able to tell the difference :naughty:

The MET courses get a good name, I did the Photojournalism one there and thoroughly enjoyed it, however there must be one a bit closer to you - Cumbernauld College probably do something suitable..

Well I feel like a royal idiot - i've only just moved to Cumbernauld and for some reason, didn't even think of Cumbernauld College...

Off to the interweb I go...

Ta!

Well I live near Cumbernauld and know the college do courses but have never heard anything about them. There is a camera club in Kilsyth (the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth CC) and a really good one (so I have been informed) in Falkirk.

Hi Clare,

Looking about myself for a course as I am about to buy my first DSLR upgrading from my bridge camera...there seem to be a few in C/nuald college...

I am probably going to opt for sat morns at the Met...stay the other side of Glasgow now...I hope they still have places...

Used to stay in Abronhill for a few years...many moons ago...there are quite a few differing subject matters/places to photo local to you...go enjoy...out of curi...is the zoo still open...?

We should all meet up - a newbie camera club (nearly wrote nudie, mind must be on something else!)

it's a shame that the Met's courses all seem to insist on a Mac otherwise I may have been interested in 1.

i did the HNC at motherwell college and the lecturers are pretty damn good!

start at the met on monday and only reason im heading there is that motherwell dont run a HND which is a bit of a pita

Well I had a wee check last night and nothing at Cumbernauld College, the Met seems to be the best one so far...

I don't have the cash for a course just now (just spent the money on the camera - lol) so looks like it might have to wait.

Newbie camera club sounds interesting though - :D

meet up with someone that knows what they are talking about and pick their brains

also read your manual it should give you (or at least in canons case) a decent intro into what each of the settings do. The internet is also full of free information about how to start using a dSLR too.

Ross

yeah, I got kinda half way through the manual and my brain started to bleed a little bit :-)

I got a digital photography recently as well, it's just trying to decipher all the language. I'm getting there though, and will keep trying until I start to understand it...

Well I am not a newbie, despite what it says under my user name :nono: but I am usually out and about with the camera, although I do tend to stick mostly to wildlife. Personally a newbie meet would be a great idea for you but equally so would going along to a camera club night and meeting other togs.

I'm thinking about checking out the Cumbernauld & Kilsyth camera club night, just to see what little bits of info they can tell me.

The photography for me is going to be more of a "live event" thing, and don't know what other areas that'll extend to - would like to try some other genres and see what comes of it :)

I'll definintely look out for some meets in the area then - would be good to meet some fellow togs and see what everyone is up to :)

Well I phoned the Met and they only have a few spaces left on certain courses...

I am booked in for a sat morn...the Gothic Photography Course...5 weeks...for £44...looks not bad as you do some indoor model and lighting...out door stuff...and some Photoshoping...

http://www.glasgowmet.ac.uk/gothic-photography.aspx

I'm off on hols to Mexico in a couple of weeks...but wouldnt mind a meet some time...glasgow...midway...or Edinburgh...

I have flirted wirth cameras for a wee while...been a member of three clubs...Bearsden & Milngavie mostly older chaps who seemed to meet and talk about their photos and have guest speakers...(I felt like an outsider here, not much teaching or learning)...Clydebank...a good wee club only managed a few meets, but as the night conflicted with an GSA art school class then & Orange Wednesdays now(some teaching and comps etc)...Drumchapel...A small group of mainly quite good photographers who had some model shoots, comps etc...(a lot could be learned...but the committment was too much for me just now as they wanted everyone to have some sort of extra duty/input)...I will prob rejoin Drumchapel later...maybe next year...

The saga is Finished...

There are limited places on some courses at the Met...but they start soon (Im on hols)...SOME LOOK REALLY GOOD...and must be as the courses have 18 places and the waiting list is 60...so if you are interested...BE QUICK...!!!

Anyway...back to togging... If anyone is interested in meeting up, add your names to this thread with a comment/ & any ideas, when I get back from hols 23rd Sept...I'll collate the stuff...make a plan...and PM all the names...then we can see where it goes from there...!!!

I don't think i'm going to be able to go on any courses - ILA funding has gone on something else, lol - so it may be a next year thing for me but I'll give them a wee call and see what I can do :-)

As for the meet, count me in :) Glasgow works a lot better for me for obvious reasons but whatever works for everyone else is good for me :-)

We can try and organise something soon, there are lots of us in Central Scotland now...

Brill - maybe we can se up a "Central Scotland" meet up in the meet-ups folder closer to the time everyone's available? :)

Up for that

It may be worthwhile checking out the camera club in Cumbernauld to see what it's like - I remember one of their members being through at Falkirk judging our competition night and he came across very well, enthusiastic, knowledgable, friendly and most definitely not the 'stuffy type'

Although the Falkirk club is well attended, I've went along to most of the sessions over the last couple of years and I do not recall any nights dedicated to camera technique and general tuition.

There's a wealth of knowledge available to you on this very forum and others

And of course there is understanding exposure by Bryan Petersen as already mentioned :D
