Gmail Spam Help!

We all have gmail email accounts in our family and generally these have been fine but today my wife's account started sending spam links to her contacts.

I'm assuming the only way this can happen is if her password has been compromised? She only uses a browser to access gmail (no other email client) and the laptop she generally uses is clean.

I've changed the password and checked account settings - any other suggestions would be appreciated!

It is not necessarily the case that her 'account' is sending these spammy emails. Especially if she only accesses gmail via a browser.

It is much more likely that someone who has your wife's email address in their address book, on their computer, has been infected and it is they who are sending out these emails - spoofing your wife's address.

I wondered if that might be the case but it seems that the recipients are all people in her gmail contacts list (e.g. I've received one which has multiple recipients some of which are old email addresses of mine that only she would know from years ago).

As an aside, it appears now that a couple of "live" friends have received these and also clicked on the links :(
