Good 'Walkabout' IS Canon lens

I'd hold out for IS.

Well, as i can't seem to find a good priced 18-55 IS i may very well opt for the 50mm F1.8

I'm afraid I must disagree with those suggesting the 50mm f/1.8 as an alternative to the kit zoom. I don't think it's a good idea for a beginner to be limited to 80mm equivalent focal length. That's a portrait length so you'll be very limited in terms of distance to subject and composition.

Just get the kit zoom and have done with it. I'd even suggest non-IS to start, so you can learn about the relationship between focal length, shutter speed and camera shake. There's no practical difference in lens sharpness at the beginner level, you're going to be limited by your technique. Stop fretting and buy something - if you buy second hand, you can sell for what you paid so it's risk-free.

i have a 28-135 for sale, if you could stretch your budget to £175?? :D

and its just had the zoom mechanism replaced so its all nice and tight and doesnt zoom creep etc..

The 18-55mm IS lens is a better lens than it's predecessor. Not just because of IS - which is pretty useless at these focal lengths unless you deal with indoor photos most of the time - in which case the nifty 50 is a better lens.

The IS version can be got from OneStop for £77.45 here as a part a dSLR package that they split to sell a body only.

Thanks but i would prefer one that hasn't had to undergo repairs etc.

Tony,

I have a Canon EF 28-90mm kit lens left over from my Canon days. Only thing, I can't find a lens cap, but you could pick one up for a couple of quid or so.

It would tide you over until you decide which lens you want to buy, which could go on for many months, and would allow you to shoot some photos till then.

You're very welcome to it for free. If you PM me your address I will post it off to you 1st class so you could have it for Saturday.

Julie

Julia welcome to TP and  on your kind offer, you will fit in well here!

Think i have managed to find an almost brand new 18-55mm IS lens for £65 delivered too!!

Go for it...if that falls through then that 28-135 does sound a very good buy. They can produce very sharp images.

Well, ordered the 18-55 IS. Should have it on Sat.

Now, i will try to learn with the above lens but, eventually, i will probably like to buy a nice 'Walkabout' lens. One with a starter of 18 up to a nice size zoom, or, i may purchase a 55-250mm IS.

Got the 1000D body this morning from Jessops. Took out the extra insurance for 3 years. I should have the 18-55mm IS lens tomorrow!! (2nd hand)

Just got to say, the manager at my local Jessops was an awesome guy! Really helpful indeed. Went out of his way to help me and was very professional and friendly.

The 18-55 IS is a good lens and better than people think. The 55-250 is another lens that is built to a budget but exceeds it's build quality by producing very sharp images with an impressive focal length. They go for about £120 -£140 in the for sale section. My father has one and i was amazed by how sharp it is. If one pops up in the the for sale section I'll deff buy it!

The 18-55 and 55-250 make a great pair.

When looking at lens image examples i go to flickr groups and pop the lens in the search engine that i'm looking at. Loads of images will pop up taken with that lens.

Another good place is here> - just look for the lens you're interested in and look at the examples posted by members.

If not, you can always sell it here in the classifieds. But give it a go first, you might actually like it, you have nothing to lose.

My offer still stands though, PM me your address & I'll send you an EF 28-80 lens for free, I don't even want the postage costs, it will tide you over till you eventually buy the lens of your choice. I must warn you though, it hasn't IS, or USM & definitely not an L series.

Update. had the money back from the Amazon deal as the lens was not what was advertised.

Had the Lens from JulieBell. Many thanks indeed! What a great person. My nephew was going to have it for the 1000D but he bought a 28-135 IS after reading on these forums so i am now using the lens that JulieBell kindly sent for nothing!!

I am still after an 18-55 IS though as i do shoot indoors etc and would be nice to have IS.

Nice lens JulieBell. Cheers

I have used the expensive Canon 24-105 IS on a full frame and it is fantastic, on a crop body i use a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 brought used for under £200 and it is excellent, I have also used the Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro which i did not like as much as the Tamron.

A little OT - Sorry - I thought you had a pentax bought by the out laws for you? Have you changed your camera again? I must have blinked and missed something!!

Try and keep up to date for goodness sake!! lol :D

I don't think it's anyone's business really, and it's not very fair to quiz the guy over his choices. I've been changing my lenses quite a few times already this year, mainly because I just can't find something I am truly happy with...

Why did you move from the Pentax to the G10 to the 450d and then the 500d?

It is all documented in this very forum. Pentax K-x had a problem so had to go back, G10 had terrible EVF i couldn't live with and the 500D came at the right price! Now, lets move on please. Ta
