Hey Guys, need to pick your brains.

I have my website ( www.gdphotographer.co.uk ) and Im trying to get it higher up the google listings.

So far to try and help:

1. I have my website advertised on all forums I am a member of, all my social accounts like facebook etc etc.

2. I have changed the front page so that there is some key words on it, such as WEDDING PHOTOGRAPGER SOUTHEND ON SEA


Question is how can I get more views to my website and get it ranked higher on the google listings.

You can submit it to the local business directory on there...then it'll appear on the first page above the first actual search terms! Mine is 4th in the business section, and I haven't bothered looking where it is in the actual search results (but it's not in the first 7 or 8 pages!) for wedding photography in Manchester! I get a fair few visits as a result :)

Did a quick check with a keyword density checker and it looks like your not getting full benefit due to missing meta-tags

How do I go about adding myself to the local business directory?
Is this something like yell.com?
 
Google Webmaster is your friend here too, lots of tips etc to help along the way. Getting listed can take months. Put some metadata keywords in your code, I don't see any, it'll help a little. No-ones going to type in your website address unless they know you. Try to think of common terms relating on what your advertising, not forgetting the location too, think what you would type into google if you were looking for wedding photographer in your area. Theres a host of tools and reading material on google webmasters, making the site is the easiest part, getting good listings is the hard bit;)
 
The text on your front page needs to be written better such as:

Home

Welcome to Gary Derbridge Photography.

I am an up and coming photographer based in Southend-On-Sea in Essex.

Welcome to Gary Derbridge Photography. I specialise in Wedding.... name the others rather than just say all types of photography helps the user and google will see the words as relevant to your site.

Could do with a links page and reciprocate with other sites.

I would advise against this.

As already mentioned above Google Webmaster tools is your friend. Are you already using Analytics to get a benchmark of visits etc? If not you should be to see if changes are working or not (it is all well and good being at the top of Google, but if you have a high bounce rate and no one is staying on your site you need to make changes).

Most importantly get the Google SEO guide, its a pdf from Google that tells you how to optimise your site for their search engine.

The real secret to good search engine ranking is good content on your site though.

It helps in the beginning to help you get your site off the ground. But as you improve the content on your site, people will start naturally linking to you. As Craikeybaby says, content is what you need to work on. Make it good enough, people will come back, recommend etc etc...Reciprocal links will help to start with, but dont rely on it.
