Gorillapods

I was looking into one, but needed it at short notice, and didn't want to pay the extortionate prices in high-street shops! As far as I could tell, they're really useful in certain situations where a proper tripod it out of the question, but not a real replacement. They can sag under heavy load, but depending on what lens you use your 400D will probably be o.k!

They look ideal if you are travelling or do not want to carry a large tripod say whilst out walking - but seem very overpriced for the DSLR versions.

I got the medium size one free with a mag subscription, depends on what you have, they are really not so good for a big beefy camera – you would possibly be better with a bean bag. But it is really good for holding a remote flash or to support a reflector, I use it quite a lot for macro work. Plus when travelling really light it is great for a compact camera.

I've got the SLR zoom version and I've used it once. It's a bit of a pain to fix to the camera and I really ought to get a ball head for it but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra expense.

I bought it for macro photography but then bought the ring flash which means I can handhold.

I love mine for when I don't want to hump a big tripod round with me. The SLR model is quite sturdy.

This was taken in York Minster with a 20D, so quite heavy. Pod wrapped around the top of a pew.

It made quite a good 'handle' for taking portrait format shots too.

Got My SLR Gorilla Pod from Asda a wee while ago for about £12ish...dont know if they still have them in...worth a look

I have always wanted to try one, they seem very good and small.

i have one, i got the dslr one for my trip to the US. Amazing things, and its handy how easy they are to wrap around trees and gates.
When i get my large slr and get a huge lens i will see if i can use one for that.. so much easer and more portable than the tripod.. if you have the chance to get one.

I reckon these would be great for mounting a flash onto for off camera shooting, means you practical stick the flash anywhere

I got an ickle one when I bought my little Fuji Z10fd and carry it with me as I know it will be very useful and is always dead handy... ... but never used it in anger yet... :D

It is a Green one though... :naughty:

:p

I have the SLR Zoom.

It's very light and therefore easy to pop into the camera bag and carry around. It will grip most things well - lamp posts, fences, seats and all manner of objects suddenly become useful camera supports.

It does need a ball head adding to make it useful (I use the one off my tripod) and it's not always a replacement for a proper tripod as you can only mount the camera where there is something to attach the Gorillapod to - you can't very well move a park bench a few feet to frame a shot how you want! If using it as a tripod you need to spread the legs very wide for heavier camera/lens combinations, so the camera will be very low down on whatever surface you are using.

Here's a 1/2 second exposure taken using it on a waste bin:
