okay, so finally made the decision of going full frame and as I cannot afford a new 5D mkII got myself a well looked after used 5D. Had a little play with it this evening and am almost disappointed with it compared to my 40D which is wrong I know. Just little things like the amount of time it takes to come to life which I know won't bother me, or hope won't, when I am used to it but it almost feels like a step backwards. Fingers crossed that when I do a shoot in anger I will feel that it is money well spent!

The 5D is a stunning camera. Now what? Go and take some pictures! When you look at them on your PC you will be blown away...
With every bit of kit it takes a bit of time to get used to, your dof will be less, your lenses will be a bit weird looking, the fps will be slow, the buffer will fill... but you know in a few good sessions with it you'll look at the pics and it'll be coming into its own.
Keep us updated btw, considering picking up one of these myself now, the bay prices are looking quite tempting

it's the 5D mk1 not mk2 unfortunately but I am looking forward to using it and hopefully getting some great shots.
I went from a 40D to the 5D at first i though ive made a mistake but i've got used to it, the images blow the 40D out the water, thing with the 5D is i found that to get the best out of it you need the good glass lens for it.

That is never a problem I've noticed on my 5D1. :shrug:
This is very true. The 75-300 f/3.5-5.6 I had on my previous 300D got replaced by a 70-200 f/2.8L pretty quickly when I discovered how merciless the 5D is with lenses.

Well, I've got a couple of canon primes, a Sigma 70-200 2.8 and I have a Tamron 27-85 2.8 arriving this weekend so hopefully that is good enough glass for the time being. I am excited about being ff again as I grew up on film ff with my old Eos 5 and 1
Mine is ready to use as soon as I've turned it on or woken it up via the shutter button etc. No delays worth thinking about. And I'm not talkng about times in the region of 2, 3, 4 seconds etc, but fractions of a second.
Hmm, maybe it was me. I've not had a chance to play with it again since buying it so quite possible I am exaggerating. My 40D just seemed to switch on and it was up and running with no wait at all.
Got a shoot on Sunday lined up so will test it properly then. Excited!

Honestly, you'll love the 5D. Just remember to give the sensor a going over with a rocket blower before every shoot if you change lenses frequently (no dust reduction system). And don't worry if your pics look rubbish on the screen, they'll be fine on your PC! 
I've had a 40D as well as a 5D. The 5D is a far superior camera in terms of image quality and there's something about full frame images from a 5D that crop sensor cameras just can't deliver. Even though handling wise, it might feel like a slight step back.
I had the Tamron 28-75 2.8 on my 5D as well, it's a great lens, much cheaper than the Canon 24-70 but the images it produces are very, very, good. You can't go wrong with that lens on a 5D!
Enjoy it, and stay patient - it will be worth it.

If anything, the 5D is marginally faster to get to a shot from power off.
