Graphic Tablets

I have the slightly older Wacom Bamboo (smallest one, they have a newer one out now) and it's a brilliant piece of kit. The wireless and batteryless pen is wonderful, and you can set what the two buttons on it do (I have mine set to scroll and right-click). It works great on a single screen, and if I had only one screen I would not hesitate to splash the cash on some of their higher end models, which also include multi-touch finger gestures like Apple's trackpads. However, I have an external monitor plugged into my MacBook when it's on my desk (the only time I'd use a tablet) and Wacom only let you map the tablet over your total screen space. This means that half the tablet area is taken up by one screen, and the other half of it the other screen. As you can probably tell, this isn't great as it effectively halves your horizontal resolution/accuracy and makes it almost impossible to work. There are some patches you can download that let you map it only to one screen, or one screen at a time with a key-press to move it between screens, but I haven't managed to get them working successfully yet. I'm quite happy with my trackpad so I stick to that.
 
I'll also add that once you start using one, you find yourself using it for things like web-browsing and general navigation too, not just for editing/drawing. It's such an ergonomic and natural way to navigate, especially once you get your buttons sorted out and if you have the multi-touch tech of the newer Wacom's.

I've tried them and couldn't get used to it, can't tell you what it was or put a finger on the reason, jut didn't work for me...

Best advice I could offer is to see if you can try one first and see how you feel working with one.
 
Got the bamboo too (as a test to see whether it'd be worth it)

Take a bit to get used to the hand/eye coordination, but pretty good. Not as responsive to light touchs and minor accurate details, but it is the entry model so :/

Use it once in a while now, still using hte mouse for more things.
Nice to have if you want to sketch on the comp or as a creative experiment
 
I've had my Wacom Intuos 4 Small for about 3 weeks now and I'm finally getting used to it, much better than using a mouse.
 
Don't use it for anything other than retouching (I don't even like tablets for browsing - preferring a real keyboard). Wouldn't be without it though...
