Windose xp pro has lost the desktop!
My machine started up but the desktop did not appear it is gray? I can see the bottom tool bar and can access all programs and data via the start menu.
I have run some routines but this has made no difference. If I make a shortcut and put it onto the desktop it disappears. I know not where it goes

Can you do a restore to a previous time to see if that restores your desktop ??

try not to break your pc with system restore, press start and run then type msconfig into that and press enter

when the system config tool opens tab to startup and untick all the check box's. Click apply and ok then press restart when prompted. if that gets you back to desktop tick a couple of box's and reboot until it ends up gray and step back until you find the offender, let me know what it is. if that fails move to the services tab, tick the hide microsoft box and do the same thing you did with the startup tab, rinse and repeat until you get a result.

is it a pirated version by any chance?

If its discovered to be a pirate copy it can grey screen and remove the entire desktop. Found this out after buying a PC from a friend and updated it :(

you can still use the desktop and it tells you why its done it.

not on mine it didn't, wiped background image and made desktop unusable.

Try downloading and running Malwarebytes, see if that comes up with anything. Only other time I've had this is with a virus.

maybe the crack the guy used was fighting back :)

i have seen my fair share as a computer engineer and windows does nothing more than change the desktop background and put the WGA icon on the taskbar to nag you its a pirate copy.
