Yes
Just got a new Extreme 8g CF card and a multi card reader but the card reader cannot be recognised when plugged into the computer (both computers, all USB slots). No drivers with it, should be plug and play and no model number on so I cannot search Internet. I have contacted the retailer for further info on this so next I plug the D300 direct into the computer via usb cable and thumbnails come up in Bridge but with no image and cannot be opened.............? On the laptop I have the Nikon software installed and can import through that but I would have thought Bridge should see and understand the images when the cameras is plugged in????????? Just had a very frustrating hour and not really got anywhere - any tips on plugging camera directly in appreciated, I use Bridge/CS5 for workflow.

Have you tried a different card in the reader to see if that makes a difference? Also if you have a spare usb lead try changing that, I thought one of my readers was duff, but it turned out that the (new) lead was faulty.

Another thought, did you buy the card from a reliable source, ie not from Ebay?

SD card is genuine and from a 'proper' retailer. Images save on card and transfer across via Nikon transfer. I have just bought another card reader and that is not helping either. Camera plugged into computer is recognised as D300 storage and images off both sd and cf cards show when d300 icon is clicked but in bridge it states no items to display although I can drag to a folder and then bridge will see but this is not the way I want to transfer. No issues with dedicated sd reader just frustrating today trying to get images from cf. Grrrrr.

Sounds like you need to download the latest RAW codec from Adobe to me.
If bridge wont open or show thumbnails, then that is almost definately the problem.

I am leaning toward a problem with the card reader as I have no issue bringing files from the SD card into Bridge/CR and once the files are transfered to a folder from the camera I can bring into Bridge without a problem. I will find someone who has a reader that reads their CF cards and try that and for now bring in files from camera via USB transfer. Why can't everything JUST WORK!

Is there a pic of the reader on the retailer's website?

Does it show up in Disk Management? Mine needs a card in it before it shows up.

This is the 1st one I got - device not recognised:

The other one off the market is recognised somtimes. A light comes on when the SD card is plugged in but not the CF - the CF card does not seem to seat properly in the reader. I will try the card in some other readers that peeps have until I find one that works!

Thanks all for the input - I am happy the card is OK and once I find a reader that works for me I'll be a bit more chilled. Up until now all my images have been brought in from the card through a reader and for a while I may have to bring in straight from the camera via USB lead when I use the CF card - I seem to remember reading that people had a bit of an aversion to doing this - are there any issues I am not aware of? I think the vain of the stuff I read was down to loss of quality but I can't see how that could be - especially when bringing in a lossless format.........................

Try Nikon Transfer to get them direct from the camera.
Yeah, I have it on the laptop so will install on PC for time being - that works OK but not my ideal workflow but it will do for now. Cheers.

Silly question perhaps but are you sure you're putting the CF card in the right way up? Try it the other way - gently though in case it was right first time.

(PS. Care is needed putting CF cards in readers - it's very easy to bend the contact pins.)

I've plugged it in every orifice to try and make it work. Fits in the slot better upside down but still not recognised. Better not show the wife this thread!

Hmm, weird.

The only other thing I can think of is - uninstall the reader in Control Panel/Device Manager, unplug reader, restart PC, plug reader back in (rear port, direct conn to motherboard) - and try CF card again.

Got a dedicated CF card reader off ebay - 'Intergral' for around a fiver delivered and it works fine............ah well.

Is the new card an SDHC one? (the original post says it's a CF but the story's changed). Older SD readers won't read SDHC cards but newer ones will. For a while, I used the netbook (with a built in SDHC reader) to read the cards and copied the contents onto a USB stick to transfer them to the PC. New PC has a built in reader that can handle SDHC cards.

In post 3 it looks like I confused my CF for my SD I was that frustrated. It is the new Extreme 60mb/s CF card. I have a dedicated SD reader that works fine with the SD card and now a dedicated CF reader that works unlike the multi card readers!

I've had several generic cheap card readers and none have worked properly on all my PCs/usb ports. Whilst I am the last person here to say "buy Sandisk cards, they are the best and will never let you down", I have to say that the two Sandisk readers I own have worked on everything I've ever plugged them in to. A CF reader that I've had a few years, and a nice little shiny black multi reader that I've had for a couple of years. Never a problem with either.
