Hi All,

My 4 year old daughter is involved in a gymnastics display tomorrow.

We have been told we can take pictures if we want but no flash.

I have a nifty fifty 1.8 and a sigma 18-200 f3.5-f6.3

Bearing in mind they have said no flash which lens and settings should I use to get some good shots of my daughter?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take care,

Keith

Hi Keith. Might have been better posted in sports. However, if the events been, post some pics. If not, it will depend on where the event is how good or poor the lighting is. My experience of gym class in the local school hall was pretty dire. Clutter in the bg, poor lighting. Also depends on what you daughter does - floor, beam, etc. You will probably get best results with the 1.8 and still/posed pics if you can get close enough. I think the 18-200 with its smaller aperture might not help if the lighting isn't bright. Bump the ISO so you can use a wide aperture, a ss of 1/500 if you can. Anything slower is going to be diffcult.

I agree with Carol, all I would add is try and take some test shots of others before you daughter performs to make setting changes.

Remember upping the ISO will inevitably introduce noise to the picture...

Plus shoot in RAW if you can. Will give you a lot more options to recover any questionable shots in PP later on.

Good luck and post some pics after if you can! :D

I'd guess the 50mm will lack in range so that leaves the 18-200mm. Shoot in RAW, wide open aperture and check out the histogram for exposure and the play back for focus. You will need a decent shutter speed (although I guess 4yr olds aren't olympiads:thinking:) so adjust iso speeds for that. Would be good to know what body you're using;)
