Does anyone use a handstrap on their DSLR at all?

I always used a leather Gordy strap with smaller bodies like the X-Pro 1 or EM5 but I've been looking at a handstrap for my D7000

As I don't mind the neck strap but I seem to either have the camera in my hands using it or its in my bag so I think I'd prefer a hand grip.

I appreciate the Nikon one is quite dear, are there other options?
 
Lots on eBay and Amazon no idea of the quality though, probably some with reviews on Amazon.
 
Must say I find it quite liberating using my D7000 strapless.
 
I hate the permanently attached neck straps, always flapping in the way and potentially hooking things and yanking the camera off a table or something.
I put a small handstrap on it from an old camera which just gives that bit of security if it should somehow slip.
 
I use this:

I don't like neck straps, and have lots of bits screwed into my tripod mount..

I like this as an emergency fail safe strap rather than a hang your camera on it permanently type strap...

I have dropped a DSLR in the past, and this gives me confidence that should I slip, there's a chance I'll catch it :)

Like I say, I don't use it to dangle my camera from, just as an emergency catch camera strap, before anyone says it doesn't look strong enough.

The advantage for me is that it unclips if I don't want it fitted in a couple of seconds..

It ticks all the boxes for me..
 
I use this high quality leather strap with an arca plate that is designed for my camera. Had it for 6 months now, still looking great. The leather is well made and long lasting. The grip inside padding is very soft and comfortable.

There is a version with a plate (Type 2, in their listing) but the plate isn't brilliant, as with most generic tripod plates. (I used it initially)

If Billingham made hand straps, that leather strap would probably be it!

The handgrip doesn't get in the way, it works great protecting the camera from slipping off your hand. It's perfect for messenger bags, where the camera either lives on your hand shooting, or in the bag.

I just use a strap that you would typically see on a compact camera (although a slight more substantial leather one that attaches via a ring rather than a thick piece of cotton)

It is only there to catch the camera if it drops out of my hand and does that perfectly.

I do however favour lighter caneras and lenses which may explain it.
 
Another vote here for the Herringbone strap linked above. Have used one on my gripped D7000 for nearly a year. Very comfortable and well constructed.

After all the Optech recommendations ive just ordered one.
Although im very happy with the strap i have i would prefer one thats easy to take off when i use a sling strap. The Optech seems ideal so ill give that ago.

One thing ive noticed is almost all the replies in this thread are for a different type of strap to what the OP was asking for.
The OP asked about hand straps but most of the replies are about wrist straps.
I guess not a lot of people use them.

I use them! and so does adrianday.

Really, for handstrap, can't beat Herringbone.

I used the Canon E-1 hand strap on a 1D3 with a 24-70 attached for quite a while. I really dislike a neck strap with larger DSLR body/lens combos. This is similar to the hand strap you're looking at for the smaller body that also attaches to the tripod mount. They're really quite nice, and once you get the tension right you can sort of dangle the camera and still use your hand/fingers for other tasks. It can be bit of a pain reaching the top controls on the camera, but again you just need to adjust the tension of the strap. I don't use mine a great deal now as I use a sling type strap pretty much all the time.
 
One useful thing about the Optech wrist strap is that you can remove it and clip on a Classic Uni Loop neck strap in seconds.

I use something like this, basically a paracord bracelet with a small length of paracord attached to the tripod mount via mini carabiner and bowline knot. Cost about £4....... Great for me because I can adjust it so it removes some of the weight to make carrying easier on the fingers over long periods.
Not sure of the strength, but 3mm paracord holds 250kg.
 
I recently got an own brand hand strap from Calumet. Does the job quite well as i find the neck strap that came with my camera uncomfortable.
I've also got a sun sniper sling strap which I use if I'm out all day.
