.
anyone used a foam filled aluminium flight case for a camera bag..?

camera bags are stupid prices for what you get

and this could sustain a lot of bumps

similar to "here" at Maplins for £29

Not personally but I have seem them in use for cameras and they worked quite well in certain circumstances. If you are in and out of the bag a lot whilst on the move they are not much use but for general transpost they are okay as long as they are deep enough for your body. Once the foam is cut you are limited to having things in the right places, so you will have to store your body/lens combo the same way every time.

I used these for mics and other audio equipment for which they were great. If there was a empty whole then you knew something was missing.

thanks - was thinking of days out in the car
have 3 bags already - all like new - what a waste of ££££
none of them now big enough

dont want to spend another £100-150....

Totally understandable. Bags are expensive and I find it hard to get one that fills all my needs.

For in the car and having all your kit in the flight cases and then decant into your walkabout bag for the bits and bobs you need it sounds like an ideal solution.

You might end up with several cases mind you.:D

You could flog off your bags.......

Canon A1 + 5 FD lenses + Speedlite in large one
Nikon D5000 + battery grip + Sigma 17-70 f2.8 + 72mm filter set in medium one
Nikon F3 + Nikkor 50mm in small one

really I need them just to "store" the ruddy kit..........:shake:

was hoping to add a 300mm and a 35mm to the D5000 - and then the bag is TOO small...thus the case idea

I do have 4 [dont ask] back-packing rucksacks
perhaps get a "pluckable" foam inset for one of those..................

too much stuff syndrome !!......

I have a couple of aluminium cases which I use to store things in the house and if I'm moving stuff in the car. Usually if I'm going out for the day I'll just pack a shoulder bag or rucksack though.

And yes I keep seeming to buy replacement bags as well :(

seems a habit of the hobby...!....:shake:

I cannot find a decent shoulder bag online to take the D5000 kit mentioned above with the 2 extras lenses - for a "reasonable" price <£120

Nowt wrong with having a rucksack fetish (fellow sufferer at one point I had 9 daysacks not to mention the full size stuff - pruned them down a lot).

I often stuff my carp centon bag into a ruckie for ease of carrying about. But as my gear expands, albeit slowly, I will have to look at other options as my decent bag is a shoulder one and not comfy for long periods.

Tony

I would love a 35 or a 50 too but struggling to find one s/h to match my meager budget.

Had a look at the maplin ones, but the hinge looks a bit 'weak'. I think Jacobs do some reasonably priced ones.

haha - I bought a full-size sack for 3day solo trek all around Glen Shiel - packed, food, 1-man alpine tent etc - couldn't lift it off the floor...:(

Budget..? notice you have a D40..........I read many people dont like the 50mm once they got it, and preferred the 35mm focal length

However I used an older Nikkor 50mm f2 Ai lens on my D40 for some time before mounting it onto my F3.......it wasn't too hard to focus using the green "indicator" light in the D40 view-finder. Bought here mint £65

you can get a 28mm or 35mm Nikon Series E lens [which BTW are all Ai-S versions] off eBay for about £40-50 if you are patient

in fact - if you want to play, my local Charity shop has a Nikon FG-20 with a 50mm f1.8 Series E lens for £28 - I'll see if it is still there tomorrow

;) The last bag he bought is a cracker....

I started with a fastpack 350 then out grew it

then a reporter D400 AW and out grew it

For light travel I now have a Flipside 400(bought new) and for full kit travel a Tamrac expedition 8x(Bought used from MPB). For storing kit at home I use a Peli 1610, which gives me easy access to everything and can be locked.

If you have kit you don't use sell it and buy something you will use :D

....the Tamrac is huuuuuge and was half new price because of original owner used Tipex for initials on the base and other than that bag was as new, a little cleaning later and Tipex 99% gone.

I've got a couple of those Maplin cases for holding my flashes , the were something like £19 on special offer, the also do a Peli-type plastic version

which was......?

well the F3 and lens is up for sale ...
plan to keep the Canon A1 - nostalgia of many many years, and plan to use film again
but the D5000 is a prob - may need to move to a backpack style

He bought my Lowepro Reporter D400AW. It holds a lot of gear but a full days walking a backpack suited me more.

They are not as strong as Peli cases which a lot of people use, me included. If you need a supplier for the foam let me know as we have a place just round the corner that chops it up to specific sizes :)

Some of the cheapo aluminium cases really are not very strong though......

WExp for £90 not bad
but looks a bit crammed though - deep - with all stuffed in everywhere

I feel the modern bag tries to cater for everything - eg pockets for cards, mobile etc

my large bag is from the 1980s
it's wide, & long with 2 end pockets and a front pocket all zipped
not too deep - the big advantage is everything is on one level so easily withdrawn and replaced into padded partitions

thanks - real Peli cases are too £££ for me
I'll see if a rucksack is modifiable ........................
the alloy cases would be for day use in the car

LOL - done that kind of thing myself.

That kinda thing would be perfect. I take the odd pic for a local band and I just need some faster glass. The 35mm is prefered but harder to get cheap. For the right lens I think I could go to about £100 at a push.

Alas since losing my job I no longer have debit/credit card so I can't use ebay ATM :(

in fact - if you want to play, my local Charity shop has a Nikon FG-20 with a 50mm f1.8 Series E lens for £28 - I'll see if it is still there tomorrow

Oooooh sounds very intesting.

I do get a little confused with older nikon stuff and compatability, I know what won't AF but as regards to metering etc I get lost.
Mind you chimping is my natural mode even with modern lenses

If you don't want the FG I'll go halves with you :)

Keep an eye on MPB the Tamrac I got retails around <140 and they had is for 64 ish.

cheers I'll go into EK on Thursday evening

Nice offer but I think it would be a step up from my MTL 5B, which is the best:eek: of my current film kit.

Tony

Heck, I've got an MTL5B too. You are right, I think you need the FG :)

Yes I do :D

Will be an incentive to off load a chunk of my M42 stuff and only keep the bit I will use. And invest in some more stuff for the Fg (If I can get it).

You can always get plenty of stuff for a Nikon though :)

You can probably get an M42 adapter but I don't think I'd bother.....

I tried in the wanted section but no joy. So I think you are right.
