Hard drive seems to full?

I bought a new Toshiba laptop about 3 months ago with windows vista installed (I must be one of the lucky ones as vista works great?)

I have one hard drive partitioned into a C/E drive about 60gb each, I have now transferred all my music and photos from the C drive onto the E drive using the cut and paste method, but I still find my C drive pretty full 40gb.

I have the same programmes installed now that I did on my old laptop (running XP) and that only used 20gb of space, so I cant see what’s filling up my C drive.

Anyone any ideas.

I made a post some time ago how vista will typically eat up 15gb of disk space over time, whereas XP will eat up 5gb. I seem to recall my findings were rubbished at the time... However, Vista is the culprit.
 
Everytime Vista does an update it creates a restore point, over time this eats up huge amounts of disc. If your happy the PC is stable then got to system restore & delete the restore points (it keeps the last one). This *should* give you a shed load of space back :)

Also it's worth doing a disk Cleanup to get rid of tempory files / cookies etc
 
12Gb!!! That is insane! I wish I could do the same on my Mac, but suspect I won't be able to free up that much space!

Right click on drive (in explorer) , click properties, click disk cleanup then select advanced tab. Then select delete restore points.

Wow thanks, gone from having 99GB free space on my C drive to having 144GB :thumbs:
 
hehe, got rid of 35Gb of stuff. Which really shocked me because i've used a program called "tree size" which, as the name suggests, shows you in a easy to understand manner, the size of the hard drives 'tree' It didnt show up any massive files, except for those i was expecting (Steam folder = massive lol)

So yea, thanks for the tip dude
 
Does this work on XP, i have just used it on my daughters lap top and thats great, but just wondered if it would work o my main PC...
 
for xp disk cleaning - start>programs>accessories>system tools>disk clean up - select c drive [or which ever disk you are running OS on].


Another way in Vista, cant remember on XP, is to turn system restore off and then on again. Accord to the the help, that automatically deletes all restore points - i tried it on my relatively low usage newish lappy and freed up a couple of gigs :thumbs:

I don't think XP has system restore implemented like vista, I don't *think* you can delete the restore points :(

Have a read here for XP info

I am wondering if its because you can set a maximum amount of disc space used for SR in XP, but I can't find anything similar in Vista, though not fully searched yet :shrug:
 
On XP it is "more options" - then you can remove all restore points apart from most recent.
