Has anyone been to Yellowstone?

No
I'm off to Yellowstone in Jan/Feb 2011 for a bit of wildlife photography. Myself and two others are going on an 8 person guided tour type thing for a week with a guy that specializes in wildlife in the park, and then we have hired the him for an extra 3 days private use once the week is up and the rest of the group have left. I'm hoping it's going to be an amazing experience but I was just wondering in the meantime, if any members here have been to Yellowstone in winter and if you have any thoughts, suggestions or experiences to share?

My main concern is getting the gear there. It's a once in a lifetime trip for me so want to bring as much as I can. However that more than likely means checking my 200-400 in  so I can take my 600 as hand luggage. My main fear is not the flight from Heathrow to Denver, but the flight from Denver to Bozeman (forget the spelling) as it's a small plane with strict carry on restrictions, although my ThinkTank hardDrive appears to 'just' fit in the dimmensions of the small jet. So again, if anyone has made this journey, advice would be welcome

My dad's been so many times. Will ask him when I speak to him, but not sure if he's been in Jan/Feb. I don't think he'll be able to help on carry on luggage - he normally flies to a hub and then drives.

As an aside if you don't mind, how do you find your 200-400? Trying to decide between that and a 400 prime at the moment. Does it give enough at f4 or do you miss the extra stop? And is it as sharp, or does it go soft at 400?

Cheers buddy :)

I wrote a few bits about the 200-400 on my blog, including a review of the lens and another of it with the 1.4x TC, you can read them HERE.

But if you just want me to sum up, I love it. Great lens, sharp and versatile and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if I had too! Never had any complaints with it's performace, just with my ability to use it lol

measure out a peli 1510 with dividers, it might just do you.

Also if you can fit lenses maybe a mate might take a body in with his kit or somat

Yeah I'm thinking a Peli might have to be the solution and then just fingers crossed it doesn't get lost

We are meeting one person there but the guy I'm flying with will be taking as much gear as me so no chance of him taking my stuff for me

I went to Yellowstone in winter a few years ago, and I flew into Bozeman on a smallish plane. But I'm not sure what your actual question is...?
