hi all,

Just a quick question,
I have had a 35mm about a year now and love it, I mainly take portraits and so was wondering if it would be worth me getting a 50mm as well to maybe get some more dramatic backgrounds as I have a crop camera it will be like a 80mm which is bordering on telephoto

As I have a 35mm already is it worth me doing this or will I not really notice much different? For an extra £100 I can get a 85mm, would this be a better option considering I already have a 35mm or would it not be worth the extra 100

Thank you very much for the help

What camera are you using? if it's a Canon then there's no good reason not to have the 50mm 1.8 STM, it's so cheap and by all accounts a very nice lens. If Nikon, then it's a tougher decision, I would skip the 50 and get the 85 1.8G, one of the best lenses I ever had when I shot Nikon, very reasonably priced for the quality too. At the end of my time spent with Nikon the 35mm Sigma 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8G were all I had left, had sold on all zooms. I shot 2 weddings with just those lenses.

Haha I would love to but I’m a student and have no money!

Which one Would you say I would get the most use out of in conjunction with my 35mm

I have a Nikon d3300 sadly I have the choice of the Nikon 50mm for around £200 and the 85mm for 300 second hand

I was leaning towards the 85 it’s just the extra money I don’t know if it would be worth it, I’ll have another look and see if I can get it any cheaper

The 85 in that case, it's not as tight as you'd think, but more of a diffence to the 35, I think it offers more options. You say short tele, but it's great for street shooting, especially if you're a bit wary of getting too close to people when shooting. It is great for portraits, even indoors, though you will be more restricted to head and shoulders in smaller rooms. Use the 35 for more than one person. 35/85 is a lovely combination even on cropped

Ok I think I’ll do that then

Thank you very much for the help, been debating for a while and couldn’t decide
Have a great day!

I seriously doubt you'll regret it, and if so, it would be pretty easy to sell it on, very popular prime the 85mm

I have a D3300 and the 35mm, I would not bother with a 50mm. If it were me, I would love and prefer the 85mm. I just could not afford one though.
