what iv,e seen of hdr is a case of done perfectly GOOD, or done bad CRAP. as said earlier good hdr is barely noticeable, but does the job. lots of people including our illustrious members overcook it, and it looks awful. i just don,t comment on the bad ones (don,t want to hurt peeps feelings) but will happily comment on the good ones

There's certainly a time and a place for it. I do actually like some over-cooked HDR. Maybe that's because I'm also a fan of good quality graphics in computer games.

However, I also like subtle HDR too.

What really frustrates me is when you post a HDR picture and someone replies in the thread and stages. "Can't stand HDR". My question is, if you do not like HDR, why bother to view and post. Just skip the thread :)

That said, when I posted my "Shambles" Black and white HDR shot a couple of months back, loads of people liked it including some who do not like HDR as a rule ;)

"Love it, 'til death do us part....best thing since sliced bread..." and "There's a time and place for it " are not mutually exclusive, as polls like this tend to indicate.

There is definitely a time and a place for it and for those times and places I love it. :)

HDR has its place, although almost all HDRs on here such as churches etc look terrible, most of these images can benefit with a similar outcome from good Photo shop usage.
Having said that I do like HDR when used in an abnormal and creative way, most other forums have a place to show this kind of work and comes under the appropriate subject there for those that have no interest in HDR can avoid viewing some thing they have no interest in.

I notice many many pros are using HDR as there technique now.

I like using it artistically to give some 'oooh yeah' to my images, but not so much that it looks like Armaggedon, where the sky is glowing, everyone has halos around them and people's eyes burn you.

Here's some I did.

I do agree that if you can blatantly tell it's a HDR it might be overdone.

I'm with the "time and place" camp. I also think that "overdone" HDR can work with certain images too. There's a lot of hatred of certain styles of images that really isn't necessary. It might not be something one likes, but that doesn't prevent it from being to another person's taste. It's all subjective.

We can take photographs in colour now (magical or what??), but people still shoot in mono, because it sometimes will suit the image in question.

"HDR looks nothing like what the human eye sees" is something that gets said quite a lot. OK, neither does mono. Neither do any glamour shots, as they're almost always lit artificially, or skin is smoothed in processing etc. Misty water. Colour popping. Nobody complains about Picasso's work being not true to life.

It's just an art. Tracy Emin's Unmade Bed was a load of old toss, but some people love it.

I love HDR, it gives images another dimension, all three of yours have benefited from it, un touched, I would wonder why you had posted them.
P.S, did you brake in, or find an open window:D

i like it but it has to be subtle. used to enhance an image not ruin one

even an obvious HDR is good on certain subjects but not all the time though. plus most of the overdone stuff just looks plain nasty:gag:

It's one of the tools in the PP box, can make some great images......but would be better if it wasn't an end of itself. Why post a thread saying 'Here are some HDRs I shot today'? What matters is the image, not how you got to it.

There's a time and a place for it. I do like it when subtly applied, but not when it gets OTT that it starts looking like a painting or overly CGI-esque. They're good to see once in a while but not when its churned out like a new craze. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy PP in so far as a dash of contrast, saturation, +-EV and crop where needed.

I think its all about subtlety (spelling??) when it comes to HDR i do like it if its not majorly OTT the examples posted above are cracking!! i think option 4 has taken this one! lol
