Hey everyone. Could someone please take a couple of minutes to explain to a moron exactly what HDR is and how it works? I love the effect and really want to try it, but I'm at the very begining of learning photography and am easily baffled.

Thanks, Adam.

Its basicly two or more shots at different exposures blended together.

This means where as in one shot, there is always a comprimise between the hightlights and the shadows, with HDR, you take one shot exposed for the sahdows and one for the highlights, and as many more as you like, so you get the full tonal range in the final image.
To make one, you need a tripod and software like photomatix or Photoshop CS5.

I did a 3 part video a while ago covering how to make an HDR Image Part 1 is here

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.

The way our eyes/brain work together to render and images is completely different to how a camera does it. As a result, on a very sunny day it's very difficult for the camera to correctly expose dark foreground and a bright sky with the use of say a ND filter.

To create an HDR image, you would need to take at least 2 shots of the same scene, one over exposed, 3 shots are better but more can be used.

You would then need to use photoshop, photomatix etc to combine the images. The software will then merge the images using the tones/exposure from each. This *should* then get all areas of the image exposed correctly, in a way that's very difficult/impossible to do in camera.

However, there is a tendency if *over done* to make the image to appear surreal or cartoon like.

To get the images you generally need a tripod and remote to ensure the camera doesn't move between shots. Most cameras have a "bracketing" mode which will take 3 images in close succession where you can set the exposure range, for instance -1, 0, +1

Ah, now i kind of understand it. Bit of a problem, i'm more useless with photoshop than the actual camera! I have photoshop CS5 though so just need to find a willing tutor or a book for dummies! Thanks for the help!!

There is a function is CS5 called merge to HDR. Just take the shots and the program does the rest. Its in File>Automate
