What lens would people recommend for a head and shoulders portrait on full frame (5d). I was thinking the 85mm 1.8 but perhaps I need to look at 100mm or even 135mm

135L is perfect, 85 is adequate depends on funds

I really like shooting with an 85mm on a full frame camera but you won't to get a "tight" head shot using it with this combination unless you crop the image.

The working distance you would need to use to get just headshots only, using that focal length could find that you are at or very close to the minimum focusing distance of the lens (~1 metre) plus this working distance using could make your subjects uncomfortable

I would recommend either 135 f/2 or 150 f/2.8 Macro. This would still see you less than 8 feet from them
