Ok, basically I am considering the possibility of getting a 5D MKII. The thing is I am currently using a Nikon D3. I changed from Canon to Nikon about two years ago, and although I love my D3, I have never felt 100% comfortable with my new system and after handling my dads 40D the other day I realized that I was still quite attached to the Canon system.

I am aware of some of the differences between the two cameras, noticablely the build quality, which being a pro and doing a lot of travel and photojournalism i feel that build is important. (saying that i never had too much trouble with my old 5D in the Sahara). Obviously the 5D MKII has the 21mp sensor which will be great for studio work and weddings, which is something I do. Also the weight issue too, as the 5D MKII is lighter. I would probably be able to get the Canon Equivalent with the equipment i have so no real worries with that.

I just want peoples thoughts on this, especially 5D users that can comment on the build quality and how it stands up to heavy use.

i used mine the other day at a sporting event with a 1d3 bashing off it all day, it also hammered it down with rain and i felt totally comfortable. nice build quality even if not quite as rugged as the d3

Both are excellent cameras, so ultimately it's down to you and how you get in withthe different menus and controls. A difficult choice, but I'd go for the canon if it was me. ;)

It strikes me that if Nikon had a D700 with say the D3X sensor, you probably wouldn't be looking at the 5D MKII.

You can safely assume this gap will be plugged shortly.

How much have you got invested in Nikon's lenses and flashes Darren?

It could be a costly move to swap back again, as we all know bodies are fairly transient and you can be pretty certain the Nikon has got a more competitive rival to the 5DII somewhere in the pipeline.

The brighter side will prevail :) we welome you to our family

They have one, it's called a D3x. Other than the fact that the D3x shoots 24mp, and has ISO100, there is really no difference between the D700 and D3x - except that the D3x has a slower continuous shooting speed.

I have the Nikon D3
28-70mm f2.8
70-200mm VR f2.8
24mm f2.8
85mm f1.8
SB900
SB600

Thats all I have at the moment.

I'm sure I would be able to get what I need in terms of Canon equivalent without too much extra expenditure.

I might go and have a play with a 5D MKII, as i haven't had a go since its release day.

Eh? So apart from the fact that it's completely different, there is no difference?!

Say again...?

Stay with me skywalker, it.. is... your... destiny (cue heavy breathing)

Sounds like it wouldn't be too costly to jump ship again Darren. Unless you went for the 70-200 2.8 IS II that is!

What was it that made you switch to Nikon in the first place? Is that still a concern, or has the 5DII made progress to make up for it?

Will ya pull yerself together man! Why would ya want to leave the Nikon tribe, eh?

Anyway, I'd be interested to know why you want 21mp? Do you often blow up your photos mega large or something? Because I can't see it being a difference unless you're making prints of about 50x70 or larger? I've heard of prints from D700 at 30x40 coming out fantastic, so you're wanting larger than that, then yeah, fair enough.

Actually, to correct myself, saw a show a while back where they printed a wall size canvas from the D700 and compared it with a film shot (must have been something like 9 feet x 12 feet or something rediculous). Even though the show wasn't making a proper comparison, I have to say, the print from the D700 was still amazing.

i worked my way upto a 5Dmkii and it is a fantastic camera. the 21mp isnt just for blowing things up, you can get a really nice crop out of the image if your zoom didnt tske you close enough. the iso handling is sublime and its a nice weight too.
