Evening all,

I have been asked to do a photo shoot for an up and coming boy band.

Ive not really had anything like this come in, they are rather success full having been warm up acts for some world famous artists.

They are an indie pop band but i have been told the photographers that have been used over the last 12 months for mags have given them a typical pop band look.

The job i have been given seems mission impossible at the moment, as they want a shoot that shows them using their instruments and showing the indie side....but....without losing to much of the boy band look....as thats what attracts their teen girl fans.

Part of me thinks...RUN...but as you can imagine its an opportunity that does not come up for us that often....

So anyone got any ideas.

Cheers

Personally I believe the best way to shoot boybands is with a barrett .50 cal sniper rifle. :p

Cigarettes and blindfolds optional :D:D

In all seriousness shooting bands is a nightmare, I'm working with one at the moment and trying to photograph 4 people and get them all doing what you want them to do, which is look cool without looking like pretentious ^&*'s is pretty damn difficult.

Spend some time with them, if you have the time, get to know them, listen to their stuff, see if there is a theme you can pick up on in their lyrics.

My boys do a track called Number 30 which is about a cannabis grow house, the instant theme is to shoot them outside a run down house with a door number of 30.

So if you see me and 4 indie dudes stood outside your house you know its time to tidy that front garden and perhaps the missus can lay off the sun bed for a while

I've got the same problem. Although mine are just a covers band covering indie tracks. They are writing their own stuff though. I was thinking of shooting while dusk is falling and getting silhouette shots agaist a sunset, that sort of thing. Quite moody looking. Not sure though so I've been looking at band promo pictures on google to try and get inspiration. Let me know how you get on and maybe you can give me tips for mine!

Try and get them in a nice, big and posh stately home messing about on the stairs, set up in a ballroom etc and in the grounds round a fountain. Worked for me, in fact they were the first photos I was paid for (by promoters, not by the band) and they were taken on a decent bridge camera before I got a dslr.

I usually start with getting a point of reference.

Get them to list their favourite artists, ask them as a band to come up with a series of photos of bands they like the look of.

This gives you a clue to how they want to be shown. Work with them, get a concept and go from there.

Doesn't stop them being hungover the day of the shoot and acting like primadonnas though, but make sure they agree this beforehand as then if there is the "we don't look cool enough" you have evidence to prove they wanted what you provided.

Look at comping ideas in photoshop too. This allows you to pick best individual shots to work with, and can lead to some cool ideas.
