Yes
My wife's school has a website but they are no longer in contact with the host for numerous reasons.

What the school requires is a cheap or free hosting site which they are able to update without a any knowledge of code writing.

It is a small parish school of only 150 kids and is public funded so money is tight.

The reason why they need to change is that many parents wanted to know why the school had not posted notice of the snow closures on the website. The reply was that nobody had access to change pages because of previous problems and staff who had originally been in charge of site had now left.

Is it possible any of you learned folk know of such a package?

Just a few email address' needed. A page for About, events, calendar, staff photos, history and possible a multimedia page but that is not important yet if it costs too much money.

It needs to able to be changed remotely too and by staff with very little knowledge of web building but very adequate with MS Office type programs

Thanks in advance.

I do a bit of work at a host called CWH Networks, the following package is $10.69 for one year, or $2.97 per quarter:

STARTER
500mb Disk Space
5GB Bandwidth
10 MySQL Databases
10 Email Accounts
10 Subdomains/Addon Domains
Unlimited Parked Domains
cPanel & Fantastico

In my experience cPanel is one of the best control panels out there. That package should suit your needs, I can't see you using more than that.

Since it got taken over by the new owner, I haven't noticed any downtime of my website or any of the websites I host for people.

//EDIT: Just noticed you said that you need t have no previous knowledge of web design. RVSite Builder is included, but I don't know how good that is... There's a demo at http://rvsite.rvskins.com:2082/login/?user=rvsite&pass=demo9. That's what your control panel would look like at CWH - click on RV Side Builder under the Software section.

Yeah usually they would have TheLocalCouncil.gov.uk/Theschoolname

Good old Manchester City Council don't give you more than 1 page. It describes the name of the school, head teacher and address. A google map, a list of attendance, ofsted reports and that it is voluntary aided (church school).

Not much use there then.

All other schools in the area are using pay/free sites for their websites.

Highly recommend Awardspace.com, although I've upgraded beyond the needs, It has a reasonable data and bandwidth allowance, plus it lets you have several emails, and includes PHP + MySQL database in case the site expands that way.

Blogger
Wordpress
Tumblr

Any of those would be ideal for a school or any other organisation, wanting free hosting and an easy way of disseminating information.

Parents can easily subscribe to the feeds, and there it is, in their inbox / browser / RSS reader.

That's what I'd do...

http://www.000webhost.com/

all you need is the domain, you get 1500mb space and 100GB bandwidth per month.

you don't get all the bells and whistles, just the basics but will be more than enough for a school.

upload something like Wordpress or even just a few basic pages and away you go. easily enough experience about to help you create a site if you ask :)
