I have the cheapest flashgun for my camera, a £30 Jessops one which is now no longer available... basically can anyone give me the lowdown on how a basic flashgun will interact with my camera settings? I usually shoot fully manual, but am prepared to consider also shooting in AV mode if this helps me grasp flash.
My camera doesn't adjust the recommended exposure settings in manual (when I'm looking through the viewfinder at the wee bar graph to decide how much aperture or SS to dial in) so I never know whether it will be exposed correctly. It doesn't seem to acknowledge that the flash is on board. I have the flash strength dialled down to -2 within the camera menu because my flash is so basic that you can't do that on the flash itself. But I can't use it for fill flash, as I just get white faces. Sometimes the light "ETTL" lights up and it behaves a bit differently but it's not always lit up and even then the metering guide within the viewfinder is no help to me.
Any help whatsoever gratefully received.
