Okay, finally decided on a Joomla template, Gallery and eCommerce Plug-in but stuck at the first step - installing Joomla!

Is this something that should be done over FTP and if so where do I put the Joomla! folder?

My web hosting is with One.com and I've checked with them that they do support Joomla! even after reading lots of contradictory comments online.

I've tried to make sense of the guide on the website but I'm just stumped! Any help, advice, options are appreciated or should I just give up now before I lose any more hair?

You have a PM.

the long (but easy way) is to download the latest full zip file from Joomla

extract into a folder

ftp the contents of the folder into the main web folder at your host (http / web) (make sure it is empty)

set up a new database, and remember the name/password

type your domain name in the browser. run through the install, and you will probrably need to type "localhost" into the bit talking about the database follow the onscreen instructions. Dont get hung up if the FTP setup isnt playing for you

If they support Joomla, that usually means that they can auto-install it for you?
If not then they just mean "yeah we support it, we have webspace and databases"

Good luck

What Trev said ^

My hosts have a section in the site control panel that gives you a list of things you can install, choose Joomla, fill in a few details, click a button and hey presto it's done. You install your addons from within Joomla once you have it running.

A quick look at one.com seems they prefer you to use there own website.
If so then I will find you a plugin that installs Joomla for you.
All you need is to ftp a small file to your root directory. Make a database, and run the file.
Will talk you through it once you find out if you have an auto installer or not

As for using gallery2.. I have a friend that's writing a component / plugin for me that allows you to sell photos from in content ;)

Okay, I've managed to install joomla on to 'localhost' and just having a play to see if I can get my head around it - first impressions are very good, very easy to use and some great templates and plugins out there.

Chouglez gave me a lot of help last night - thanks - but it seems that one.com don't offer fantastico so I'm stuck with a manual install. I FTP'd the Joomla folder to my server last night and installed from there but now can't log in for some reason - just get a message that access is forbidden...?

Anyway, my boss is a bit of a web geek and a Joomla whizz so once I've got something on localhost I'm happy with I might look at moving my hosting and setting it up properly.

Cheers for all the help!

ditch one.com and use a hosting company like Rochen, they include fantastico and ask a previou spost said, the installation takes less than a minute and your are up and running.

Although i think if you are struggling at this stage, you may struggle setting up ecommerce and gallery plug ins.

To be fair, installin Joomla manually is quite hard when you are starting out.

I've managed to get it all working, changed and pointed to the new configuration.php file and so far so good...

Time will tell!

How is it going?

Surprisig well, actually! Not tried uploading it to my server yet but happy playing with templates and getting something I'm happy with before I make it live!

Thank you, everyone, for your help!
