Looking to spend less than £900 if I can and looking for suggestions, I want high res to get good quality when photo editing and obviously as fast as possible to make editing smoother. I've seen that I can get this spec and price with Dell but wanted to see if anyone had other ideas or if Dell was the best way to go.

The dell was i5 processor, 6Gb, 750Gb, 17" 1920x1080, DVD burner etc etc.

I don't know much about this side of things so please help point me in the right direction.

When I was looking at a similar laptop but 15.6", the Dell was the best option. Just make sure you apply whatever Dell voucher code is applicable this week (I saved 10% on my bundle).

Do you really need a 17" Laptop? I have found them too cumbersome to move around with any regularity, so if its mainly for home use there are better options. I use a 13" MacBook Pro to carry round and then hook up to a high res monitor when I am back home

Yep, I use a 17" now so want that size in the future.

For that budget and spec I'd also turn straight to Dell as my first port of call. I've bought four Dell laptops (one for my girlfriend) and one Dell PC since 1998. Currently I'm running a 4.5 year old XPS M1710 as my main workhorse. It replaced a Dell Inspiron 8000 which served me for six years without fault, but a PIII 900 and 512MB RAM was not going to last me forever. I'm kind of getting the upgrade itch now, but really have no good reason to change yet, since the old girl (laptop, not girlfriend) keeps chugging along well enough. I suspect its replacement will either be a Dell XPS machine or possibly a Macbook Pro, although I prefer the idea of a £900 bill to one of twice that amount.

Don't know if this helps, but Tescos have an Acer i5, 6mb, 750gb on sale currently for £499 http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.212-0879.aspx

I bought an almost identical Acer laptop from them recently (i5, 5mb, 500gb, £400 ) and it runs Lightroom at lightning speed. You may not like the shiny screen though - I run mine through a Del U2311H 23in monitor (Amazon £220) following advice on here and it looks pretty good to me
