I need help making a decision on a new lens, and thought I would see what you guys thought....

Currently I have the following on a 40D (and 350D backup)

Sigma 17-50 f3.5 - 5.6
Tamron 70-300 f4 - 5.6 APO DG
Canon 50 1.4
Canon 28-135 IS USM

I enjoy doing general photography and will try anything really, not really specialising in anything.

I'm thinking of getting either a nice wide angle lens, or replacing one of the ones I have with something a bit quicker, the question is what do I want to go for?

I've looked at reviews and comparisons between 10-20mm range lenses and am thinking of either the Sigma 10-20 or possibly the Tokina 12-24 which would make my short Sigma defunct really, but then I thought of maybe changing the 70-300 for something quicker?

What would you guys recommend? new lens to complement, or replace some of the slow stuff?

Which ranges do you tend to use the most? And in those ranges, do you ever feel limited (as in you need to get a faster shutter when shooting indoor etc?) That would indicate the lens you need.

How much is your budget?

My favourite (and most used) lens is a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 because I don't like using flash so the wide aperture is great. Also, because I shoot gigs where flash is not permitted, a fast wide aperture is needed. You could consider a lens like that, or another fast normal zoom for crop sensor such as Tamron 17-50mm or Canon 17-55mm IS.

If you feel you need more wideness when shooting, you could consider a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 or similar ultrawide.

Bear in mind that the lenses I've suggested are for crop sensor cameras, so if you plan to move up to full frame soon, then they would not work.

Not really got a budget in mind.

In terms of limitations, I do find the 70-300 a bit dark inside, but very rarely use the longer end, so will either use the 50mm if its really dark, or the 28-135

I suppose the only real limitation I have come across is getting really wide for some shots, which makes me think I need the Ultra wide lens more than anything, but there are too many to choose from, hence needing the advice ;)

Long term I may go FF, but thats not really a limiting factor for me in terms of lens choice, I bought most of mine second hand, so will sell any that cant be used if I make the move

I have the Canon EF-S 10-22mm wide-angle lens. It's a beautiful piece of kit, great for landscapes, but it's quite pricey.

Not really got a budget in mind...

If budget is tight, get a Sigma 10-20.

If it's not, Canons 10-22, 17-55 2.8, 70-300 IS and sell everything else :)

Got a 40D ....

I got the Sigma 10 - 20, and it was the first lens i got > kit ... it's great.
Recently got the Sigma 50mm 1.4 - my new current fav.
